Opinion * USA - Truck solution vital
Improving traffic safety and efficiency in and around the state-run port is fast becoming a critical issue, and things are only going to get worse
Savannah,GA,USA -The Savannah Morning News -Jan 21, 2007: -- The Georgia Department of Transportation and state lawmakers should put the pedal to the metal on a solution to the danger of having so much port-related truck traffic alongside passenger cars in the Savannah area... Container shipping is booming... The Georgia Ports Authority reports that the number of trucks that haul containers into and out of the port has doubled in the past five years. The current number is expected to double over the next five... More trucks also mean more traffic bottlenecks on area roadways... The risk of accidents involving trucks and cars has increased, too... Statewide, trucking accounts for 9 percent of the traffic on all of the state's roads... So, the sooner the DOT chooses an option to move traffic around the fast-growing port, the sooner motorists will find relief... (Photo: Fort Pulaski,Savannah,GA, National Monument)
