South Carolina trucking companies and the State Ports Authority welcomed last week’s announcement of a national identification card and security pass regulating workers’ access to U.S. ports... They just don’t want to pay for it... Leroy Lemaster, owner of Lewis Truck Lines in Conway, said drivers of his company’s 45 trucks must obtain different security credentials in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia. Some of the credentials are free, some aren’t — and they all need renewal at different times. At a cost of up to $159 per ID card, they will replace the independent ID systems many ports have implemented... While some labor organizations for drivers have objected to the costs of IDs, Pound said many companies would pick up the tab for their drivers...
