REPORT * UK - Global Warming, threatens entire logistics industry
UK -Transport Intelligence -1 Nov 2006: -- The potential impact of the 'global warming' issue on the transport market has crept closer with the release of a report by the British Government on the economics of climate change and lower carbon emissions... The report, by the former World Bank economist Sir Nicholas Stern, has attempted to model the costs of the effects of global warming using the type of risk calculations found in financial markets. It has estimated that reducing carbon emission to the levels required to mitigate global warming will cost around 1% of GDP per annum for a country such as the UK... Of course, those looking in at the debate from outside the UK could be forgiven for a little scepticism. The report is published at the behest of the government and is designed to fit its political interests. However there are strong signs that the report will be the trigger for large tax increases on transportation... With slow political change in countries both in Europe and North America, the likelihood of extreme tax rises spreading beyond the UK in the short term is low. However if the UK government does go ahead with punitive taxes on transportation fuels it could set a dangerous precedent for other countries looking to strike 'green' postures. All those working in the transportation sector should be alert to what could be a major threat...
