Trucking dangerous - UK - EU lorries

London,UK -The Sun (UK), by GRANT ROLLINGS -October 26, 2006: -- Foreign lorry drivers are flouting the rules of Britain’s roads — leaving a trail of carnage and misery behind them... And expansion of the European Union is making the problem worse with truckers from overseas putting lives at risk by overworking and using vehicles with serious faults... Chief Superintendent Geraint Anwyl, a spokesman on traffic issues for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said: “This is a very serious issue and lives are at risk here... As we’ve seen accession countries coming into the EU, the offending rate is getting greater and greater”... On a typical day there are 12,000 foreign lorries and 95,000 British ones on the country's roads, according to the Department of Transport... Romanian drivers were the worst offenders, with more than 40 per cent driving for too long... Dianne Ferreira, a spokeswoman for road safety charity Brake, warned: “In order to drive in the UK, foreign drivers do not need to undergo any additional training or testing on how to drive safely on our roads..."
