DRIVERS' SHORTAGE

* USA - Trucking industry coping with driver shortage
Muncie,IN,USA -The Muncie Star Press, by KEITH ROYSDON -30 Set 2006: -- The nation's economy hums along interstate highways on 18 wheels: Three-quarters of the nation's product is shipped via truck... But a serious shortage of truck drivers, now and in the next decade, threatens to put the brakes on much of the trucking industry... The shortage has left the trucking industry scrambling to find new drivers and retain existing ones... The ATA noted that the trucking industry will need to appeal to non-traditional populations for potential drivers. Women make up five percent of drivers, while African-Americans amount to nearly 12 percent and Hispanics make up for about 10 percent of drivers. Recruiting in those areas will have to increase, the ATA said...
