Operators Slam - UK - New Vehicles' Poor Braking

UK -Transport News Network, by Peter Shakespeare -30 Aug 2006: -- The vast majority of hauliers think that truck and trailer manufacturers should supply new vehicles with proof that brake systems meet MOT braking efficiency standards. VOSA should also raise its game... Many of you will have noticed that in last month's Roadway there was a fax-back survey that focused on commercial vehicle braking efficiency and MOT test failure, an issue the RHA knows is causing problems within the industry... Poor brake test figures are the second highest reason for annual test failure, and the survey confirmed that many of your new vehicles fail at the first annual test due to low brake efficiency... Another issue concerns triaxle trailers. Many are built with spring brakes on two axles only, with standard brake chambers on the third axle. This often leads to low parking brake performance when all axle readings are combined and assessed against gross vehicle weight... There are major concerns that the MOT test pass values leave no room for error and VOSA's testing equipment is inaccurate...
