Budapest,Hungary -Transport News Network (UK) -30 Aug 2006: -- The Economy and Transport Ministry wants to charge trucks weighing over 7.5 toness for using more than 50 of Hungary's main roads, most of them trans-border routes... Drivers avoiding the payment would face heavy fines and penalties would also be levied on drivers who make diversions from the main roads and use secondary roads... The plan, which is still awaiting approval, would be a base to introduce an electronic road toll payment system based on distance travelled rather than a fixed fee. The earliest date likely for introducing the electronic payment system is the start of 2008...

The idea is to charge a fee for every mile / kilometre that a lorry drives on UK roads... The reason for this scheme is to attract revenue from foreign trucks that use the UK roads and, at present, do not pay for this use... This paper suggests using standard Internet technology at a fraction of the cost of the Government’s over complex solution...

Brussels,Belgium --Transport News Network (UK) -30 Aug 2006: -- Cabotage conducted by foreign registered vehicles across Europe has grown dramatically since the relaxation of the associated regulations in 1998... Latest figures released through the European Commission show that there has been a 13% increase in one year in the level of cabotage being undertaken within the UK before foreign registered trucks head back across the water... Germany, Holland and Belgium are reportedly the most active 'caboteurs', accounting for just under half of the total cabotage performed across Europe. The UK is also the main target for cabotage carried out by hauliers coming in from Southern Ireland...
