GreenNews - USA - Polluting Trucks Targeted in New Effort at Port of Oakland

Port of Oakland, CA,USA -KCBS, by Holly Quan -16 August 2006: -- California Air Resources inspectors set up shop today on a Port of Oakland street to conduct surprise truck inspections designed to nab polluters... those puffs of black smoke coming out of big rig stacks are being tested by people like Jerry Martin, whose job it is to get those polluting trucks off the road... "We estimate that roughly 2,400 Californians die each year from diesel exhaust just from port activities. That is trains, trucks and engines related to the ports themselves," Martin explained. "We want to cut that by 2020 to 1,500 of those deaths."...
