* NTC extends fatigue consultation period
Queensland,Australia -ATN -18 August 2006: -- The National Transport Commission (NTC) will extend the public consultation period for its controversial fatigue reforms, and promises it is listening to concerns raised by the industry... The NTC will defer its information sessions in Queensland until after the state election, extending the consultation period until September 18... Access to rest areas, demerit points and excessive queuing at loading facilities are among the issues being raised, he says...

* More rest areas, not ‘draconian’ fatigue laws
Australia -ATN -17 August 2006: -- State governments should be building more rest areas for the trucking industry, not hiding behind "draconian" fatigue regulations, the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) says... The ATA has branded fatigue regulation proposals from the National Transport Commission (NTC) as misguided and cumbersome... The ATA is preparing a response to the proposals, but is angry about the short five-week timeframe to respond... ATA Chief Executive Stuart St Clair says the package will add huge costs to the industry. "In the end it will fail to deliver the promised goods of less fatigue-related crashes," he says...
