* USA - A Warning for Owners of Pick-Up Trucks
Los Angeles,CA,USA -KTLA 5 News -August 18, 2006: -- Officials are trying to find out who's behind a rash of tailgate thefts in the San Fernando Valley... Thirty-six pickup truck tailgates have been stolen so far this year in the L-A-P-D's Mission Division... Police say that's a much higher rate of theft than they've seen in other parts of the Los Angeles area... The tailgates are worth about a thousand dollars apiece. L-A police Officer Jason Lee says they're stolen from trucks, then sold to body shops to be used as replacements for customers...

* USA - Japanese firms see sales rise for pickup trucks
USA -The Shanghai Daily, by Alan Ohnsman/Bloomberg News -21 Aug 2006: -- Toyota Motor Corp, Honda Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co have raised US sales of small and midsize pickups 17 percent this year, amid a decline for similar Ford Motor Co, General Motors Corp and Chrysler trucks... The Japanese trucks are also bucking a 16 percent decline in total pickup sales this year, paced by a drop among full-size domestic models such as Ford's F-150, Chevrolet's Silverado and the Dodge Ram... Ford said on Friday the F-150 will account for more than half of a 21 percent cut in fourth-quarter production...

* USA - Carmakers must reveal black boxes - Safety officials decide against mandating that automakers install event data recorders, though
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -August 22, 2006: -- After more than a decade of study, federal safety regulators outlined minimum requirements for "black boxes" in vehicles Monday, but stopped short of mandating them... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a new rule that says the devices, officially known as "event data recorders," must be made more durable and that all automakers must collect the same type of data from them... The rule, which takes effect in September 2010, also requires automakers to tell consumers if their vehicles are equipped with a black box by including the notification in owners' manuals...

* Germany - BMW reaches deal to sell Rover brand rights
MUNICH,Germany -Reuters -21 Aug 2006: -- Germany's BMW, the world's largest premium carmaker, has reached a deal to sell the rights to the Rover brand, the company said today, but it did not name the buyer... Nanjing Automobile and Shanghai Automotive (SAIC) are considered to be the main candidates...

* Brazil - Volkswagen says may close a factory
SAO PAULO, Brazil -Reuters -21 Aug 2006: -- Volkswagen AG's Brazilian unit said on Monday that it may close one of its factories if it fails to reach an agreement with labor unions over its proposed restructuring plan... Volkswagen has been hit hard in the last two years by the steep appreciation of the Brazilian real versus the U.S. dollar...

* China - Ford venture boosts China's Changan Auto H1 net
SHANGHAI,China -Reuters -18 Aug 2006: -- Changan Auto Co. Ltd., China's fourth-largest vehicle maker, reported a 48 percent jump in net profit in the first half today, helped by brisk sales at its venture with Ford Motor Co...

* Japan - Honda builds parts plant in Thailand to meet demand
TOKYO,Japan -Reuters -18 Aug 2006: -- Honda Motor Co., Japan's third-biggest car maker, said on Tuesday it is spending about 3.8 billion yen ($32.7 million) to build an auto parts plant in Thailand to keep pace with strong demand especially in Asia...
