More Jobs - USA - Automotive internship could lead to good for Waco High students

Waco,TX,USA -Waco Tribune Herald, by Emily Ingram -June 01, 2006: -- Christopher Perez grew up watching his father fix cars... As a young child, and into his school years, the 16-year-old said he always wanted to help his dad in the garage... This summer, Christopher and six other Waco High School juniors received yearlong internships and $3,000 in tools during a contract signing with five local dealerships and repair shops Wednesday at the automotive technology lab... Nationally, demand for automotive technicians is growing, Automotive Youth Education Systems national manager Jack Herr said, with a need of approximately 35,000 qualified technicians, meaning mechanics with appropriate certifications... Waco High automotive technology teacher Garry Engelbrecht said, the automotive technician field of today is much different from the “grease monkey” stereotype of the 1950s. With special diagnostic computer systems involved in car repair, Engelbrecht said students need the internships to learn the finer points of automotive repair... Upon graduation, an average technician with the required certifications can make approximately $50,000, Engelbrecht said.
