Futurists point to a connected transport world to solve our problems... For companies like Argos or Tesco delivering supplies to premium stores two or three times a day is perfectly normal and acceptable. In any urban area home delivery trucks for Sainsbury, Waitrose, Ocado, Asda, and – of course – Tesco, trundle along the same routes four or five times in any 24-hour period. It all adds up to an awful lot of traffic on an over-loaded infrastructure leading to gridlock, pollution and unnecessary expense. So what is the answer? Pravin Raj, director, global transportation lead, at Cisco Systems and co-editor of a new collection of essays on Connected Transportation*, believes that technology can solve our current distribution problems by creating new forms of warehousing and fine tuning vehicle technology so that trucks can travel closer together, carrying fuller loads at faster speeds entirely safely...
