Desperate for drivers, tries new recruiting tactics
With 130 percent annual turnover, employers are offering better benefits, honesty about what the job entails
Dayton,OH,USA —Dayton Daily News (subscription), by John Nolan -11 June 2006: -- The trucking industry is taking a kinder, gentler approach as it attempts to recruit thousands of new, long-haul drivers in light of a shortage that is getting worse... Trucking companies say they are trying to make the job more appealing to women, Hispanics, returning military personnel, over-50 workers looking for a second career, and the truckers already on the job, since job turnover is an industry-wide problem... The trucking carriers are trying to reduce the number of miles and days that a long-haul driver must cover before returning home, are allowing drivers more say about their schedules and are permitting drivers to take spouses or other family members along, industry officials said...
