Danger on the road - USA - Heavy truck inspectors target semis with safety violations
Munster,IN,USA -Munster Times, by MARC CHASE -June 10, 2006: -- A trucker tokes on a cigarette only a few feet away from the thousands of pounds of flammable solvent in his semitrailer at the Interstate 94 westbound weigh station near Chesterton... Another trucker there is forced to shut down his rig after heavy-truck inspectors find a large leak in an air line that controls his brakes... Both drivers were among four who had their rigs taken out of service -- all within about an hour of each other -- by Indiana State Police safety officers at the westbound weigh station... And the inspectors were just getting started... It was all part of a three-day, federally funded crackdown on dangerous trucks traveling region roadways. The enforcement mirrored a national effort, paying specific attention to bad brakes on semitrailers...
