* U.S. automakers search for the road to recovery
PROVIDENCE,RI,USA -The Providence Journal-Jan 27, 2006: Is the future of Ford Motor Co. small, inexpensive and green? That's one possible direction for the automaker... The possibility is embodied in the Ford Reflex, a one-of-a-kind prototype concept car... Something of a cross between an economy car and the Batmobile, the Reflex is powered by a diesel-electric hybrid engine, aided by camouflaged solar panels that help recharge the battery. The gas mileage should be around 65 miles per gallon. The interior is insulated with material recycled from ground-up Nike tennis shoes. The cost? Hard to say, since the car is just a prototype, but the plan would be to make it affordable for young professionals...
* Rides rack up more lifetime miles
WASHINGTON,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by Ken Thomas -Jan 28, 2006: A new government report says that cars and light trucks are racking up more miles than ever during the vehicle's lifetime... "We consistently, on any given day, usually have multiple cars with 150,000 to 250,000 miles and quite frequently cars well over that," said Pat Goss, the owner of Goss' Garage in Seabrook, Md., and the host of a radio and television show with the same name...
* Ford ordered to pay $29 million in rollover crash
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, USA -The Detroit News/AP -Jan 28, 2006: It's the first Ford-Firestone case to go to a verdict since Firestone tire recalls started in 1999... Ford Motor Co. was ordered to pay $29 million Friday in the case of a 22-year-old woman who was partially paralyzed after the Firestone tire on her Explorer failed and the vehicle rolled over....Firestone previously paid an undisclosed settlement in the case...
* Porsche says net profit up 13 percent in fiscal first half

Volkswagen of America Inc. said Friday that it was recalling about 47,000 Passat sedans and wagons from the 2003 model year because of potentially faulty fuel pumps that could lead to stalling engines...
