TechnoNews - USA - GM hydrogen vehicle may be the future

White Plains, NY,USA -THE JOURNAL NEWS -Nov 11, 2005: -- General Motors Corp. may have provided a glimpse into a cleaner, more fuel-efficient future yesterday by showing off a hydrogen-powered vehicle at the company's training center in Tarrytown... William L. Sheppard Jr., a technical fellow for GM's Fuel Cell Activities, said the company was displaying the vehicle, called a HydroGen3, because it hopes to find partners in Westchester — such as private companies or government agencies — to use fuel cell vehicles starting next year... The U.S. Postal Service uses the cars to deliver mail in part of northern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. Federal Express used one to deliver light packages in Tokyo... The body of the HydroGen3 is modeled after the Zafira, a five-passenger vehicle from GM's Opel division in Germany... Liquid hydrogen powers the fuel cell stack, which supplies electricity to a battery to power the vehicle. The only emission is water, which comes out of the tailpipe in a vapor form. The fuel cell unit is supplied from tanks with hydrogen that is stored in a liquid or compressed form. The liquid fuel tank holds enough to power the car for 250 miles, while the compressed tank can store enough for 170 miles... The company's goal is to be able to make the cars inexpensive enough for them to be marketed to the public by 2015... The company estimates that there would have to be at least 5,000 hydrogen stations in the United States in order for there to be at least one within two miles of 70 percent of the population...
