Pleasant Ridge, MI,USA -The Car Connection -15 Sept 2005:--) European automakers have lifted the covers on an assortment of hybrids and gasoline-electric concept vehicles during this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. It's a recognition not only that European motorists have had enough with soaring fuel costs, but that Japanese auto makers like Toyota have sold hybrids to the public as the greenest of all powertrain technology. Yet European industry leaders still see diesels as a more effective alternative. Indeed, Mercedes' new boss, Dieter Zetsche, pointed to a report, showing that on an across-the-U.S. test drive, a diesel-powered Mercedes sport-ute got significantly better mileage than the hybrid Lexus RX400h. But even Mercedes isn't writing off gasoline-electric technology, and is developing a diesel hybrid. Meanwhile, its U.S. sibling, Chrysler, is developing a new form of gasoline-electric propulsion under a joint venture with General Motors. In fact, another frequent European naysayer, BMW, just signed on. Whether they work or not, hybrid momentum keeps building...
