Letter from Jeffrey A. Burns: National Transportation Counsel for Parents Against Tired Truckers

Gallatin,TN,USA -Gallatin News Examiner -09/28/05: -- This letter is written in response to FMCSA Administrator Annette Sandberg’s response... Ms. Sandberg made several conclusory statements about “extensive research and public comments” that support the horrendous new regulations. She does not, however identify any research or science that backs up her claims... The truth is as follows: new Regulations gut the 70 hour per week (8 day) work limitation for drivers by letting them “restart” the 70 hours if they have 34 hours off duty. There is no legitimate science that indicates that chronic fatigue or sleep debt can be alleviated in 34 hours. In fact, the contrary is true. Nationally known sleep researcher Colonel Belenky at Walter Reed Hospital did extensive studies and found that even three nights of restorative sleep is not enough to allow individuals to recuperate from accumulated sleep loss...
