Leased to C.R. England, Heller and his wife Elizabeth live in rural Custer, S.D., and also operate a hotel, have an Internet commerce business and run a sheet metal shop and a chopper shop... But in the off tourist season, pickings are slim, so Heller turned to trucking. Where he lives the median household income is about $32,000, annually, whereas Heller can pull in $30,000 to $50,000 driving a truck. Driving team can generate $50,000 to $130,000 annually, according to C.R. England... Heller claims being an independent driver “is just like owning any other small business. It’s hard work but it’s rewarding"... “Trucking, and especially as an independent carrier, has given us the life others are struggling to get,” agreed Suz Ratkovcic, a company driver for eight years and an independent carrier for nearly four years...
