Long Island,NY,USA -Newsday -Aug 13, 2005: -- Our national love affair with the car - especially with the most gas-guzzling types - continues to make America emit more and more carbon dioxide, the prime culprit in global warming. A new report says carbon dioxide emissions from American cars and light trucks (a category that includes SUVs, minivans and pickup trucks) have soared 25 percent from 1990 to 2003. So government must prod the auto industry to curb emissions, because market forces alone are not getting it done... The report from Environmental Defense offers little reason to cheer. Not even factors that would seem likely to curb emissions - soaring gas prices, for one, and the advent of hybrid-electric cars - have slowed the growth in emissions. That's because the sales strategies of the auto firms still rely so much on the high-profit, high-emission, low-gas-mileage light truck category...
