Alerts - USA - Truckers maintain watch on highways

Salt Lake,UT,USA -The Salt Lake Tribune, by Patty Henetz -17/08/2005: -- A truck accident last week that detonated nearly 18 tons of explosives, demolished a section of federal highway and sent 20 people to the hospital has raised questions about what can prevent deliberate acts of treachery on the myriad trucks that carry hazardous materials every day... Truckers have already thought of that... Twenty-five thousand of them across the nation are now card-carrying members of Highway Watch. Hooked into a national alert system, the professional drivers are on the lookout for people and situations that seem odd enough to pose threats to public safety, David Creer, executive director of the Utah Trucking Association, said Wednesday... "They know what trucks are right or wrong," Creer said... The brainchild of the American Trucking Associations and the federal Department of Homeland Security, Highway Watch teaches truckers to watch for the out-of-the-ordinary...
