Railing against the trucks that eat Sydney
New South Wales,Australia -Sydney Morning Herald(subscription)-June 9 2005: -- The city is about to be crippled by an influx of container trucks, and painful decisions need to be taken now to ease the calamity. But there are ways, argues Darren Goodsir, to profit from what seems a helpless situation... It is not our worsening addiction to cars that will further clog already packed bitumen arteries. The truck industry - obliged to take greater volumes of freight - will be responsible for most of the problem. Freight haulers have no other option at the moment than to go by road because of the poor rail network... This blueprint examines far-reaching measures needed to redress the balance between rail and road freight. It also focuses on roads and road tunnels that need to be built for city motorists. If nothing is done to fix rail's deteriorating market share - at present 22 per cent - truck volumes will triple, air and noise pollution will soar, as will the financial and emotional costs associated with higher accident rates...
