-- The distance around the Earth is 24,901 miles. Dennis Day has traveled this distance the equivalent of 120.5 times to total 3 million consecutive, accident-free miles during his career as a Con-way Freight Driver Sales Representative... The Lawrenceville resident was honored for his accomplishment at a special ceremony on Oct. 8 at Con-Way Freight’s Norcross Service center. Day is the ninth driver in the company’s 33-year history to receive this honor and was previously honored for surpassing 1 and 2 million miles accident-free... “There’s nothing more important than safety,” Day said in a statement. “When you’re driving a truck of this size, it takes precision, focus, and constant attentiveness to ensure your safety, as well as the safety of the other motorists and pedestrians. It’s an honor to be recognized for this achievement, and I hope this motivates other drivers to be as safe as possible on the road” ... Day joined Con-Way Freight in 1987 and has been a professional truck driver for more than 34 years...

AWARDS * USA - Longtime Norman truck driver wins national award

The 58-year-old Norman trucker received the 2009 Super Van Operator award from the American Moving & Storage Association, an industry trade group

Norman,OK,USA -Trading Markets -Feb 28, 2010: -- David Cambell logs thousands of miles a month hauling specialized freight in his Volvo tractor trailer rig. He drives through all of the lower 48 and into Canada, 300 to 330 days a year, through all kinds of weather. So a round-trip ticket to relatively warmer weather in Phoenix on board an airliner was a treat of sorts. Getting a national award from his peers in the moving industry wasn't bad either... The industry has changed considerably in his career. He has driven more than 2 million miles with no accidents or traffic citations... The industry is a bit different now than when he first started. Trucks are larger and more user-friendly, with air shocks, better creature comforts, high-tech electronics and safety equipment... But the kinship shared with other over-the-road truckers is waning... "There's not the camaraderie there used to be. There are more demands from the industry. Everybody's in such a rush these days," Cambell said... Regulatory changes find their way into drivers' pockets. "Whatever happens, it invariably affects your income," he said...

TRUCKER'S STORY * USA - Con-way Freight's Dale Duncan is 2009 National Truck Driving Grand Champion

Dale's driving skills and knowledge of transportation and truck safety information topped those of 415 other professional drivers from all across the United States in the National Truck Driving Championships, held in Pittsburgh, Pa. The 72nd annual "Super Bowl of Safety" is sponsored by the American Trucking Associations... En route to his title, Dale has logged 26 accident and injury free years as a driver, with over 1.25 million miles behind the wheel. Dale began competing in the National Truck Driving Championships in 1995, when he placed sixth in his division... The contestants were the state champions in nine truck types from all 50 states. Collectively, they have driven 521,946,523 accident-free miles... In their respective classes, drivers tested their expertise in the driving skills they use daily. The competition course inside Pittsburgh's David L. Lawrence Convention Center challenged their knowledge of safety, equipment and the industry. AWARD * Ireland - Innovator of the Year 2009

Dublin,Ireland -HGV -2 June 2009: -- Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD, presented Neil McDonnell of Wincanton Ireland with the Innovator of the Year Award 2009 on behalf of the Chartered Institute of and Transport (CILT) Eastern Section recently... McDonnell won the award for his paper "Strategic food storage as a component part of national disaster planning." His paper suggests that the pursuit of lean supply chains adds to the need for strategic food storage and he suggests how this might be done... TRUCKER'S AWARD * USA - Tucson trucker honored for amazing safety record

Tucson,AR,USA -The Arizona The Arizona Daily Star, by Dan Sullivan -16 Feb 2009: -- Accidents are prevalent on the highway — but one Tucson-based trucker has driven the equivalent of from the earth to the moon about four times without a collision... After spending 30 years in the Marine Corps, 63-year-old Larry Gerhart went into the trucking business and has his own one-man trucking company, B&K Trucking Inc.... Gerhart said he thrived from the dedication to duty he saw in the Marines and his driving record reflects his dedication... In 2007, 4,584 people were killed in accidents involving large trucks, a report from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shows. But Gerhart has gone 14 years without having an accident, which is why he was recently recognized by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association's Safe Driving Award Program... AWARD * USA - Police Officer Credits Actions of Goodyear Highway Hero For Sparing Him From Serious Harm or Death

Akron,OH,USA -Truck Net, by Craig Zwiener- November 18, 2008: -- Officer Lou Gregoire of the Gwinnett County Police Department believes the actions of truck drivers, like David Zorn, make them more of a hero... Back in 2000, Zorn was driving an 18-wheeler, he stopped his truck when he witnessed Gregoire being attacked on the shoulder of U.S. Interstate 85 in Norcross, Ga., on the outskirts of Atlanta. Gregoire’s attacker had him pinned on the ground, but when he saw the 6-foot, 2-inch, 250-pound truck driver coming at him brandishing a large flashlight, he fled. Seeing the attacker had no weapon, Zorn pursued, caught and held him on the ground until other police officers arrived... Zorn, who is now working as a regional driver for Yellow Transportation, still has a hard time seeing himself as a hero. Rather he looks at himself as someone who was angry that no one else would stop to help a police officer in trouble...

Brent has driven a UPS truck for the last 22 years and racked up over a million miles. The impressive bit: He did it in the same truck — and he didn’t have one accident in all that time... When truck number 507903 was issued to him in 1987, Mr. Boyd got behind the wheel and just didn’t stop. On September 4, 2008 Brent and 507903 rolled right past a million miles, and UPS saw fit to recognize his achievements. AWARD * USA - Hemet trucker has a No. 1 stunner at big-rig beauty contest

RHODES -September 3, 2008: -- Just a few days before the Great American Trucking Show's Pride & Polish event, Justin Moore didn't know if he would even make it to Dallas, Texas. But he is glad he did... After the judges thoroughly inspected his purple Peterbilt by crawling underneath it and peering closely at every detail inside and out, Moore was awarded first place at the truck beauty contest sponsored by Overdrive... Moore has always taken pride in his ride... With a brand-new daughter at home, Moore said he had to work hard to find loads to haul to make the trip worth his while, since he only gets 6.5 to 8.5 miles per gallon of gasoline... A palm tree pick-up in Fallbrook led to a drop-off in Midland. And a load from Arizona to Ontario was included in his return trip... FedEx driver in Parsippany heads to 'Super Bowl of Safety'

Parsippany, NJ,USA -The Daily Record, by Meghan Van Dyk -August 10, 2008: -- In his 28 years as a professional truck driver, Kevin Wilkening has seen it all -- drivers talking on cell phones, applying make-up, shaving and even typing on laptops. But distracted drivers are just one of the obstacles the 47-year-old faces everyday in his big rig... "There's no time for a break," Wilkening said. "You've got to be alert at all times, watching mirrors, making sure there is enough time to brake, enough room to turn. Truck drivers are held to a higher standard -- there's no room for error"...
