FLEET'S COSTS * USA: Maintenance and repair tripled from 2010 to 2014.

* Nebraska - Maintenance costs soar as city's fire engines and trucks age

Lincoln Fire and Rescue has spent more money trying to keep some aging trucks and engines running than the city paid for them in the first place, according to a 2015 fire department report... TRUCKS MAINTENANCE * USA

* Tennessee - Flat rate vs hourly pay.   Which model provides better productivity in the shop?

Nashville,TENN,USA -Truck News, by James Menzies -1 May 2013: -- Is a truck repair facility better off paying its technicians hourly, or a flat rate per job? And what is the preference of technicians and customers? ... There has been plenty of debate around the merits of flat rate versus hourly pay structures for technicians, whether they work for OEM dealerships, independent shops or a fleet’s own in-house maintenance operations... A panel at this year’s Technology and Maintenance Council meetings examined the issue from both sides. Scott Witt, vice-president and general operations manager with Virginia Truck Center, said his company pays its technicians an hourly wage, with bonuses. In the end, it’s more of a hybrid system, since technicians are rewarded for completing jobs in less time than is expected...

TRUCKS' TEST * UK

* Annual truck test first-time pass rates hit all-time high

(Photo: Trucks' test by VOSA)
London,EN,UK -Commercial Motor, by David Wilcox -23 January 2013: -- The roadworthiness of UK trucks, as measured by their performance at their annual test, has hit a record new high, with three-quarters of all trucks passing at the first attempt. According to Vosa’s Annual Effectiveness Report published this month, the initial pass rate for trucks tested in the 12 months to 31 March 2012 rose to 75.3%. This is one percentage point above the previous year’s figure, and the fifth successive increase. The pass rate for trailers also reached an all-time high in 2011/12, rising for the 10th year in succession to reach 82.7%, up from 82.1% in 2010/11... Despite these improvement in truck test performance, the industry still has some way to go before it can match the bus and coach sector. The first-time test pass rate for buses and coaches in 2011/2012 was 81%. Nevertheless, the gap between the sectors is closing: 10 years ago the bus and coach pass rate was 12 percentage points better: now the margin is down to less than half that...
