Chicago,Ill,USA -WLS/TV, by Paul Meincke -July 2, 2009: -- We've all seen them on the roads, big rigs hauling heavy, oversized loads. The operators of those trucks need permits, or they're subject to fines. Just ask truck driver Bill Carlson. He got hit with a fine that'll take your breath away... Truckers pay significant fees for oversize loads. It's a system meant to protect our roads, and if truckers don't have the proper permits, they can get whacked with some pretty significant fines... The fine structure, based largely on truck weight, is complicated stuff. But for Bill Carlson, it went beyond complicated when he got an overweight ticket for $16,965... "What was your reaction when the officer told you how much this ticket was for? Ha, I thought the driver was joking. I never heard of anything so strange," said Bill Carlson, trucking company owner... (See Video)

FINES * USA - $1 Fines for Truckers

Some Vermont lawmakers are working on a plan to allow big rigs on the Interstate

Montpelier,Vermont,USA -WCAX -February 16, 2009: -- ... Federal law prohibits trucks weighing 90,000 pounds from using Interstates 89 and 91... That forces many big rigs to use state roads in Vermont, because the weight limit on them is higher. Many towns say local roads are taking a beating and having those big trucks moving through town is a safety hazard... Lawmakers are proposing only fining truck drivers $1 if their rig is overweight on the federal level, but under the state regulation... Lawmakers hope more truckers would opt for the Interstate to save time and money...

HIGHER TRAFFIC FINES * USA - Florida OKs' ones, to bolster budget

FL,USA - Land Line Magazine. by Keith Goble -January 20, 2009: -- The Florida Legislature approved a bill that would increase fines for driving violations. It is intended to help plug a $2.3 billion budget hole... Meeting during a special budget-cutting session this month, lawmakers endorsed legislation that would raise the cost of all traffic tickets by $10 while speeders would pay $25 more... Judges also would be prohibited from waiving fines... The extra money for the state is expected to reach $16 million this year and $63 million in 2010. It would be routed into newly created trust funds that pay public defenders and prosecutors...

Truck Offences * Canada - Municipal trucks grind up streets

Overloaded. City fined $16,000 over two years

Montreal,Quebec,Canada -The Gazette, by LINDA GYULAI -7 July 2008: -- Even as the city of Montreal steps up its pothole-eradicating efforts, its own overloaded city trucks appear to be a major culprit in beating up the streets... More than half of the tickets provincial highway patrols have issued against the city since 2006 have been for overloaded trucks, The Gazette discovered in a review of roadside inspection reports from the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec... Overloaded trucks cause cracks in the road, which lead to potholes, experts say. They also cause rutting, leaving uneven road surfaces, the experts say... By comparison, less than one-quarter of truck offences across the province involve excess weight, the SAAQ says...
