FUEL EFFICIENCY * USA: Proposal for trucks

* DC - U.S. regulators seek more input on truck fuel efficiency rules

-- U.S. regulators said on Thursday they are reopening a proposal to boost fuel efficiency of medium and heavy duty trucks through 2027, asking for additional public comments on the planned toughening... The decision by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Environmental Protection Agency to consider additional public comments through April 1 comes amid a sharp slump in U.S. large truck sales that has sparked thousands of layoffs... In June, the Obama administration said its proposed 2021-2027 medium/heavy duty truck rules would cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1 billion metric tons, reduce fuel costs by about $170 billion, and lessen oil consumption by up to 1.8 billion barrels over the lifetime of the vehicles... The standards for vehicle and engine performance apply to semi-trucks, large pickup trucks and vans, buses and work trucks... A slump in U.S. commercial truck sales has accelerated...

TRUCKS EFFICIENCY * USA: "Off-the-shelf" technologies to reduce heavy-duty fuel consumption by 15%

* DC - Fuel-efficient heavy trucks are on the horizon

-- Heavy-duty vehicles (more than 8,500 lbs. gross vehicle weight) are central to our economy: tractor-trailers carry goods, vocational trucks and heavy pickups help provide services, and transit buses transport passengers. In 2015, heavy-duty vehicles represented only 5% of on-road vehicles but consumed 30% of all highway fuel... Efforts to improve the fuel efficiency of heavy-duty vehicles got a major legislative boost in 2007 with the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA), which mandated fuel efficiency standards for these vehicles. The "Phase 1" standards took advantage of existing "off-the-shelf" technologies to reduce heavy-duty fuel consumption by 15%, on average, from 2010 levels in 2017... DOT and EPA have proposed a second phase of the rule, which is expected to be adopted this summer. The proposed Phase 2 standards would reduce new heavy-duty vehicles’ fuel consumption by an additional 24%, on average, in 2027. Future trucks will be equipped with advanced technologies like waste heat recovery for engines, dual clutch transmissions, highly aerodynamic tractors, and fuel efficient trailers with skirts, gap reducers, and boat tails. These improvements are cost-effective, paying back upfront costs in fuel savings within 2 years (tractor trucks) to 6 years (vocational vehicles). The heavy-duty vehicle standards will further establish US leadership in advanced truck and engine manufacturing and, as proposed, save almost 1.5 million barrels of oil per day in 2040...

INEFFICIENCIES * USA: Under HOS, shippers lose more than 44,000 miles yearly

* Arkansas - Trucking Report: Shipping customers losing driver time to inefficiencies

-- As shippers feel the crunch of a truck driver shortage, a report from one of the largest U.S. freight companies says buyers of transportation service could greatly increase capacity if they managed their time better... Titled “660 Minutes,” after the maximum time drivers can be behind the wheel each day under federal regulations, the report from J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. estimates that shippers lose more than 44,000 miles, or 63 loads, annually for each driver to excessive paperwork, long waits at distribution centers and other inefficiencies... Under the federal “hours-of-service” rules, drivers are permitted 11 hours on the road and a total of 14 hours of on duty time, with a required 30-minute break during the period. But the reality, the report says, is that drivers spend only 6.5 hours on the road after spending time on pickup, delivery, safety inspections and other tasks before running out of time—and that’s on their best days... The inefficiency leads to higher freight rates, which will either cut into the margins of retailers and other shipping customers or press them to raise the prices of their products... Several technology companies are competing to help companies get more efficient in how they deliver and receive shipments. That reduces the time needed for dispatchers to find out if specific drivers are waiting in their lots, and calling them to move forward in line... J.B. Hunt believes if shippers and receivers clean up their acts, allowing flexible appointment times and expediting loading and unloading times, each truck driver in the U.S. could travel 44,375 miles further than they do now...

PICKUP TRUCKMAKERS NEWS USA: * Ford - * ... They are more efficient than they once were

* Michigan - Rounding up the latest from Ford

-- Ford Motor Co. has been busy of late, revealing 2016 model enhancements for its F-150 pickup, along with new camera technology options for its Super Duty line of trucks, while offering details on a series of research projects aimed at everything from autonomous vehicle testing to uncovering the daily habits of fleet drivers... A new split-view camera feature will be available on Ford's 2016 Super Duty model to help drivers see traffic and obstacles that enter the vehicle’s path from the side by displaying a 180-degree view of the area in front of or behind a vehicle. Split view uses real-time video feeds from 1-megapixel wide-angle lens cameras in the grille and tailgate. A tri-panel display in the 8-inch screen helps customers understand quickly whether an obstacle is coming from either side or straight on. It automatically shuts off when vehicle speed reaches 6.2 mph...

* New York - 5 Trucks and SUVs with absolutely terrible gas mileage


-- Pickup trucks, vans, crossovers and SUVs are more efficient than they once were, but that isn't saying much... The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute found that cars and light trucks purchased in 2014 got an average of 25.4 miles to the gallon. That's still less than halfway to the EPA and Department of Transportation's goal that it set back in 2012, but it beats the roughly 19 miles per gallon that the Department of Transportation measured for the same pool of vehicles in 1995. It's also closing in on double the average mileage of the light-duty vehicles on U.S. roads in 1980...
