* Ontario trucking companies optimistic about next quarter 

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News -May 25, 2012: -- The majority of trucking companies in Ontario remain optimistic about their prospects for the next three months despite negative freight volume prospects, according to the second quarter business expectations survey conducted by the Ontario Trucking Association. According to survey, 67% of carriers reported they were optimistic about trucking’s overall prospects for the quarter – the same number as in the first quarter survey. This is off the peak of 75% recorded in the 1Q11 survey, but significantly higher than the bare majority (55%) who said they were optimistic about the industry’s overall prospects from the 4Q11 survey. Only a quarter of respondents reported improvement in intra-Ontario freight volumes compared to the last quarter –the same as reported in the first quarter survey. Pessimism for the immediate future grew with only 30% of carriers expecting increases in the latter half of 2012 versus 39% who were upbeat in the last survey..


* TransCore's Canadian Freight Index dips slightly in April

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News, by Lou Smyrlis -May 24, 2012: -- TransCore’s spot market Canadian freight index saw a three percent decline in April, down from a high mark set in March 2012, but remains well above recessionary levels. Year-over-year volumes were down 11% from the record highs in 2011... Cross-border postings continued to dominate in April accounting for 73% of activity by Loadlink’s Canadian customers. Intra-Canada postings made up 23% of the total load volumes...  Total equipment postings in March decreased 3% from the previous month, while year-over-year capacity was up 19% from March 2011. Capacity has tightened compared to earlier in the year; however equipment availability remains more abundant than the tight capacity crunch and record low from April 2011...

* DfT reveals freight statistics for European journeys

London,EN,UK -TRL, by Nick Anderson -24 Feb 2012: -- The number of goods vehicles travelling from the UK to mainland Europe remained steady in 2011, figures show...  Published by the Department for Transport (DfT), data revealed 2.47 million of these vehicles made the journey last year - unchanged from the level seen in 2010...  While 660,000 of the vehicles were unaccompanied trailers, 1.91 million were powered motors - a one per cent growth on 2010...  The majority of powered vehicles travelled to mainland Europe via the Dover Straits Port Group, which includes the Channel Tunnel, while most unaccompanied trailers used the North Sea Port Group...  Earlier this month, figures from Accident Exchange revealed foreign lorry accidents in the UK cost around £57 million every year, while these trucks were 'at fault' in one in every 31 motorway accidents between December 2010 and the same time the following year...

TRUCKING STATISTICS * USA - Strong Truckload Demand

Load volumes rose faster than expected in October, trucking analyst says

Washiington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by William B. Cassidy -Dec 12, 2011: -- Truckload freight volumes were stronger than analysts expected in the first weeks of the fourth quarter, according to investment research firm Jefferies...  Seasonally adjusted truckload volumes were up 3.2 percent year-over-year in October, according to American Trucking Associations data, Jefferies said Monday. Non-adjusted volumes were up 3.4 percent. The investment firm, in comparison, expected truckload volumes to increase 2 to 3 percent in that period...  That strength was apparent at Landstar System, which said last week said loads in the first 10 weeks of the fourth quarter were up 9 percent from a year ago. According to the ATA, truckload revenue per mile was up 4.2 percent in October, less than the 5.2 percent increase reported in September, Jefferies said... Separately, the ATA reported truck tonnage increased 5.7 percent year-over-year in October, largely thanks to the strength of U.S. manufacturing...


* DC - DOT Freight Transport Index Rises 4%

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -14 Dec 2011: -- The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 4% in October from a year ago but took its first month-to-month downturn in five months, DOT said Wednesday...  The freight index dipped 0.2% from September following four increases, DOT’s Bureau of Trade Statistics said in its monthly report...  Despite the slip, the index, at a reading of 109.4, is at its second-highest level since July 2008. DOT uses a baseline reading of 100 from the year 2000 for the freight TSI...  Freight shipments through the first 10 months of 2011 are up 2.3% over last year, DOT said...  Shipments are down 0.5% in the five years from October 2006, but are up 11.6% in the 10 years from October 2001, despite declines in recent years...

TRUCKING STATISTICS WORLDWIDE * USA - DOT Freight Index Flat in July

Freight shipments 3.8 percent higher from July 2010

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce -Sep 14, 2011: -- Shipments carried by the on-hire freight transportation industry were unchanged in July from June, according to the Transportation Department’s Freight Transportation Services Index... The Freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted index measuring month-to-month changes in freight shipments in ton miles. The index covers for-hire trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight... For the first seven months of 2011, the index was up 1.3 percent. The 108.3 readings in June and July were the second-highest since August 2008. Shipments have risen in eight of the last 15 months... Freight shipments rose 3.8 percent from July 2010 to July 2011 but remain below the 109.9 level of July 2008 (109.9) and the record July reading of 110.9 in 2005...


* Europa - Freight Forwarding Index stable

Brussels,Belgium -Truck Europe, by Claude Yvens -5 Sept 2011: -- Few changes in the August edition of the European Freight Forwarding Index: the activity index increased from 43 to 46 (although those questioned had expected 50), but this situation was primarily influenced by a drop in air freight volumes. Forecasts for the next two months point to an index rising to 56 or 57 with road and sea freight expected to remain more or less stable, and air freight to recover...


* Canada - TransCore's Canadian Freight Index sees double digit increase for August

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Truck News, by Lou Smyrlis -Sep 20, 2011: -- TransCore's Canadian Freight Index for the nation's spot market in August was up 10% from July 2011 and had a 12% increase year-over-year. August 2011 freight volumes were the highest for same month over the last five years... Equipment postings in August reached the highest levels for 2011, with capacity up over 11 percent from last month's total. Capacity was three percent above recorded levels for August 2010... The equipment-to-loads ratio remained virtually unchanged from the level established in July... TransCore's Loadlink freight matching database constitutes the largest Canadian network of carriers, owner operators, freight brokers and intermediaries and has been available to Canadian subscribers since its inception in 1990. Over 13 million full loads, LTL (less than truck load) shipments and trucks are posted to the Loadlink network annually. As a result of this high volume, TransCore believes its Canadian Freight Index is representative of the ups and downs in spot market freight movement and provides a historical account of the domestic and cross border spot market freight movement...
