AUTONOMOUS DRIVING * USA: Trucker: A vulnerable job to automation

* New York - The scariest chart about autonomous driving

--- When Americans talk about “robots taking our jobs,” they’re usually referring to factory work. That’s because we don’t have self-driving trucks yet... Truck driving is one of the occupations most vulnerable to automation, and one of the most common. That combination, many believe, represents one of the largest eventual threats to the American economy... There are 1.8 million truck drivers in the U.S., making it one of the largest occupations in the country... Some economies rely on truck driving more than others: In Omaha, 2.8% of people who have jobs are truckers. In Joplin, Mo., it’s 5.6%.  Here, a list of the metros—small and large—where the largest percentage of workers are truckers according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data:
 - Memphis: 2.3% (14,420 truck drivers) - Joplin, Mo.: 5.6% (4,300 truck drivers)
- Fayetville, N.C.: 4.2% (9,820 truck drivers)
- Midland, Texas: 4.2% (3,620 truck drivers)
- Fort Smith, Ark.: 3.9% (4,240 truck drivers)
- Greeley, Co.: 3.5% (3,410 truck drivers)
... The threat of losing those jobs over the next decade is real: Last fall a truck full of beer in Colorado made the first fully automated delivery...

TRUCKERS NEWS * USA - States discuss driver’s licensing of illegal immigrants

Grain Valley,MO,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Keith Goble -11 March 2011: -- Two states allow illegal immigrants to obtain full-blown driver’s licenses. One more state offers a permit that allows them to drive, but not use the license as an ID. In these and other states, lawmakers are discussing legislation that would change licensing rules... In recent years, the list of states providing driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants has dropped from nine to two – New Mexico and Washington. In Utah, illegal immigrants can obtain licenses to drive but they cannot use the licenses as identification... The Alaska House approved a bill that would link driver’s licenses to residency. As is the case in 30 states, HB3 would tie a driver’s license validity to the duration of a person’s authorized residency in the U.S... An Oregon bill would return illegal immigrants’ right to drive. Since 2008, Oregon has required people to show proof of citizenship to be eligible for a driver’s privilege card... (Photo from blog.fleetowner: trucks at work)

‘Disorderly Conduct’ * USA - Could ticket for, get you fired? It ‘depends’ …

Every state has a Disorderly Conduct statute that seems to cover just about anything that a cop would not like you to do

PENN,USA -The Trucker News, by JIM KLEPPER -12 Aug 2009: -- I received a ticket for “Disorderly Conduct” and would like to know how it will affect my driving record. How can a Disorderly Conduct conviction affect your driving record depends... Every state has a Disorderly Conduct statute that seems to cover just about anything that a cop would not like you to do... All the Disorderly Conduct laws require that the person charged knowingly or intentionally committed the crime, which requires a mens rea (criminal mind)...

Truckers Beware * USA - If criminal record doesn’t immediately show

That certainly doesn’t mean it won’t haunt you later. A typical question from drivers is: “How come you got my infraction/misdemeanor/felony record scan and the %$#@!! thing shows that I have a criminal record and I don’t?”

USA -The Trucker News Services, by Derek Hinton -20 April 2009: -- A typical question from drivers is: “How come you got my infraction/misdemeanor/felony record scan and the %$#@!! thing shows that I have a criminal record and I don’t?”... The reason is that usually companies have created databases containing criminal records that are searched by last name, first name and date of birth. And so if your name is John Doe, chances are there are many more John Doe’s born on your birthday and a few of them have criminal records. Somebody else’s offense is showing up on your report. At that point, we can work to insure that you are not refused a job because someone else has committed a crime... In general, if you have not been convicted of a crime, you should make sure your record reflects that before you are turned down for jobs. If you have been convicted of a crime, you should know what the record shows and react according to your situation. In either case, the key is to be proactive and deal from a position of knowledge...

TRUCKER'S DEATH * USA - Court extends street racers' sentence in trucker's death

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -19 Jan 2009: -- A 20-year-old who admitted to "murdering" a truck driver as a result of a deadly street race should have been sent to jail instead of receiving a conditional sentence, the Ontario Court of Appeal has ruled... Nauman Nusrat was sentenced to house arrest (after time served) for two years and was given a lifetime ban on driving by Ontario Court Judge Gregory Regis. The Crown, however, appealed that decision and won... In its latest ruling, the Ontario Court of Appeal substituted a penitentiary sentence of 2.5 years in place of Regis' sentence. However, Appeals Court Judge Gloria Epstein there would be little point sending Nusrat back to jail since he would only serve a few more months... However, the new sentence sets a benchmark for cases of two other racers involved in the incident that day...
