--- Trucking operators in NSW will soon be able to access a new online driver licence check... The new Driver Licence Check went live today and streamlines the old system to enable operators to check multiple licences and demerit point status at one time... Minister for Roads and Freight, Duncan Gay, said it's imperative trucking operators know whether their drivers hold a current valid licence and the new system will greatly improve their ability to complete these checks... The Driver Licence Check system is regularly updated to ensure operators have access to real time information... Use of the Driver Licence Check system is voluntary...

Road Test Renewal * Canada - OTA wants MTO to shift gears with recent automatic testing rule

Toronto,ONT,CAN -Today's Trucking -6 Nov 2009: -- News that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation would allow older drivers to use automatic transmissions when re-testing was met with welcome arms, but industry stakeholders still want more... After receiving a letter from the MTO stating that as of Nov. 1, 2009, senior drivers who are required to take a road test renewal after they turn 65 (and every year thereafter) can do so with an automatic transmission, the Private Truck Motor Council of Canada said it was a good move. But still wants to know where the MTO stands on reforming other aspects of the requirement to retest veteran drivers annually...

LGV Licence * UK - Age is lowered to 18

The legal age a person can acquire an LGV (large goods vehicle) licence has been lowered from 21 to 18

London,UK -Road Transport, by Laura Hailstone -11 September 2009: ... opening up the talent pool that operators can draw from... Introduced as part of the new Driver CPC legislation, which came into force on 10 September, the change is good news for the road haulage industry... Dr Mick Jackson, CEO of Skills for Logistics, tells Roadtransport.com: "It enables us to get young people into the industry sooner, before they decide to take a different career path" ... "The really good news for operators is that by starting them at 18, they will qualify for government apprenticeship funding, which is only available to people aged between 16 and 19. Previously, young people starting out at 21 didn't qualify for apprenticeship funding"...

Australia's transport ministers have agreed to a national registration and licensing system for the country's truck drivers

The announcement came after Friday's Australian Transport Council (ATC) meeting in Melbourne, which was attended by federal, state and territory transport ministers... Mr Albanese said the plan was the first step towards a fully integrated national transport system... The new licensing and registration system will come into effect by July 1, 2009... The ATC plan - announced as a "new beginning" for transport - will also include a national approach to maritime legislation, and the establishment of a national road safety advisory council in a bid to cut the road toll...
