Trucker's Fight * USA - Officer allegedly injured man during routine stop

Sioux Falls, S.D,USA -The Hawk Eye, by JOHN MANGALONZO -4 Aug 2009: -- The scars of the past never really healed for David Howard, a 71-year-old Sioux Falls, S.D., truck driver who said he was repeatedly pistol-whipped by an Iowa Department of Transportation vehicle enforcement officer four years ago in Mount Pleasant... The officer, who Howard identified as Darrell Wiegand, is the same officer a Fort Madison couple allege harassed and menaced them during a traffic stop earlier this year... While waiting to be unloaded at his delivery stop later that day, Howard was approached by three other truckers who said they saw the incident with Wiegand unfold. One trucker's wife videotaped the incident, Howard said... On the way back to South Dakota, Howard received a call from DOT in Des Moines asking to meet, which they did. An internal investigation was launched, and that was the last he heard from the officials... Weeks after the incident, Howard felt something on his head and found an inch-long sliver of a bone about the size of a toothpick, according to medical records... So far, Howard has spent nearly $40,000 in medical bills, which includes ongoing treatment. He suffered a fractured rib, along with that injury to his skull... Howard's Estherville-based attorney, Kevin Sandler, would not comment on the matter except to confirm Howard is his client... There is no telling what would happen to the lawsuit, but Howard says he is waiting for his day in court. He will not let this go, he added, and will put his name and reputation to his claims... "I ain't scared of the man," he said. "I'll take him as high as I can to the highest court in the land"...

TRUCKERS FIGHT * USA & Canada - OOIDA and others fight truck restrictions on NY roads

Trucking associations, industries and business groups have banded together to fight a proposal that would ban trucks on seven upstate New York routes

New York,NY,USA -Land Line Magazine -July 22, 2009: -- The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and more than 20 other business and industry associations have signed on to endorse a letter from the New York State Motor Truck Association urging Gov. David Paterson not to move forward with the “Reasonable Access Highway Regulation”... When tolls increased on in May 2005, a task force of upstate residents put pressure on lawmakers and the New York Department of Transportation to deal with an increased number of New York City trash haulers on local roadways... NYDOT brought the proposal forward in 2008, and it now sits on Paterson’s desk for consideration... * Canada - Ice road trucker gets frosty treatment

Yellowknife,NWT,CAN -Today's Trucking -21 July 2009: -- He’s made his reputation hauling goods across Canada’s frozen north and he’s certified to inspect tankers... But when one of his employees misread a number on the side of a tank, Alan Scraba had no less than 15 dangerous goods charges thrown at him... According to a report in the local media, Scraba, the owner of ARS Trucking and Welding, received a ticket in February 2009, citing him with 15 violations relating to an inspection from a Department of Transportation inspector – two years earlier... Scraba ended up pleading guilty to one of the charges of transporting fuel in an improper fuel container and paying a $3,000 fine.The Crown withdrew the other charges... And all that happened at that time was an employee misread a gauge on a tank and he pressurized it for 10 minutes instead of the requisite 30 when he was testing it for leaks... TRUCKERS' FIGHT * Canada - OOIDA continues speed limiter battle

Toronto,Ont,CAN -Truck News -28 March 2009: -- The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) is meeting with provincial and federal officials on the issue of speed limiters in early April, and is looking for anecdotal reports from truckers... The US-based owner/operator association wants to hear from American and Canadian drivers who have experienced problems with the speed limiter legislation in Ontario and Quebec... * Canada - 'The time has come to end regressive tolls'

Dieppe,NB,CAN -Truck News -27 March 2009: -- The Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association has continued its offensive on road and marine tolls in the region, a little more than a week after lashing out at a proposal that would reintroduce tolls to New Brunswick highways... Executive director Peter Nelson reiterating this stance at a board of directors meeting where the group voted to support an initiative to remove tolls from the Saint John Harbour Bridge...

* USA - For Taxpayer Dollars

When it comes to taking it on the chin from the railroads over the fight for government funding, the trucking industry is apparently mad as hell and they're not going to take it anymore

Washington,DC,USA -Traffic World, by John Gallagher -24 Feb 2009: -- ... That's the message gleaned from a new ad campaign from the American Trucking Associations countering a long-running railroad campaign boasting that a ton of freight moving over the rails gets 436 miles to the gallon - four times farther than it can move by truck... But trucking seeks to one-up the railroads by creating a message that resonates directly with consumers... "The railroad industry talks a lot about fuel efficiency per ton," the ATA ad states. "Unfortunately, being fuel efficient in a straight line doesn't get food to grocery stores, supplies to business, or life's essentials to the home."... * Canada - All systems go for speed-limiter protest Monday in Ontario

ONT,CAN -Land Line Magazine -28 Feb 2009: -- Truckers are gathering Monday, March 2, to call attention to a law they say will hurt small-business truckers and highway safety in the province of Ontario... The provincial government began enforcing regulations Jan. 1 that require speed limiters to be set at a maximum of 105 kilometers per hour, or 65 mph, on all heavy trucks manufactured since 1995, regardless of where they are base plated... The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and Owner-Operators Business Association of Canada filed comments and testified against the law on grounds that it will limit competition and violate rules of fair trade inside and outside the province... OOIDA member Scott Mooney, an owner-operator from Cambridge, Ontario, organized the grassroots protest, saying the Liberal Party government has ignored repeated testimony that mandatory speed limiters will hurt trucking... He is hoping truckers can gain the attention of lawmakers to repeal or at least amend the law...
