TRUCKS THIEVES * Ireland - Car crime on the rise

Dublin,Ireland -HGV Ireland -October 5, 2010: -- A major survey from AA Insurance has shown that one in 10 of all motorists and nearly 15% of motorists in Dublin have been victims of car crime in the last two years...   In an online poll carried out by the AA last week with 6,500 responses nationwide, 3.7% of motorists have either had their car stolen or have had an attempt made to steal it in the last two years. 6.5% have either had their car broken into or an attempt made to break into it...   With modern cars being fitted with complex immobilisers, a common tactic for thieves is to take keys off hall tables or from convenient key racks near the door, simply by ‘fishing’ for them with a pole through the letterbox... ANTITHEFT * USA - Better Technology, but Smarter Car Thieves

Tracking systems with GPS can pinpoint any vehicle and direct the authorities straight to the crooks

New York,NY,USA -The New York Times, by JOHN R. QUAIN -July 8, 2010: -- Based on the advertisements, it would seem that technology has made it impossible — or at least stunningly foolhardy — to steal a car. Tracking systems with GPS can pinpoint any vehicle and direct the authorities straight to the crooks. But while the technology may be getting better, professional car thieves have stepped up their game, too, meaning that some tracking systems may be better than others... The car theft rate has steadily declined for five years. The F.B.I. recorded a drop of nearly 17 percent in 2009 compared with 2008. But auto theft remains a costly crime: the F.B.I. estimates that more than $6.4 billion was lost in motor vehicle thefts in 2008, the most recent numbers available. More important, knowing that fewer cars are stolen today than a decade ago is not much consolation if yours is one of those taken — one every 33 seconds, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau... While law enforcement officials and car security experts couldn’t directly attribute the drop in thefts to the use of tracking technology, most agreed that it has had an effect. And all concurred that if you want to improve the chances of recovering your wheels once they’ve gone missing, these systems are a necessity... Consequently, competitors like LoJack, Escort and Blackline GPS try to take a different approach and conceal their tracking devices... Trucks Thieves * USA - Jonesing for drug

The U.S. is witnessing a virtual crime wave of pharmaceutical truck thefts

Enfield,CONN,USA -Today's Trucking -9 July 2010: ... Most recently, thieves took about $75 million worth of drugs from an Eli Lily warehouse in Enfield Connecticut... About a year ago, a group of thieves in Virginia netted about $5 million worth of drugs from a GlaxoSmithKline warehouse by dropping -- Hollywood caper style -- through the roof on trapeze-style rigging. They then took their time loading a tractor trailer, which they drove away, safely... Authorities report that stolen truckloads of drugs are usually shipped to Latin America or to illegitimate online pharmacies. Sometimes, experts say, the hot meds make their way back into the legitimate stream, under private labels... Most of the thefts occur at truckstops and most, experts say, are non-violent. But with that kind of money involved, they’re the work of pros, who take great care in conducting pre-operation recon to ferret out targets... Smith -25 Feb 2010: -- As truck driver Richard Miller curled up to sleep in his cab after a cross-country trip to Indianapolis, two ski-masked men tossed him out of his truck, beat him and drove off with his trailer full of liquor... Cargo Thieves * USA - Getting savvier

Cargo thieves are getting bolder and more sophisticated

Austin,TX,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Feb 22, 2010: -- According to a recent analysis of cargo theft trends in the U.S., cargo thieves are getting bolder and more sophisticated, willing to take larger risks as the average value of cargo shipments – especially those hauled by trucks – continues to climb... Truckloads containing $487 million of goods were stolen in the U.S. in 2009, a 67% increase over the $290 million worth of products swiped a year earlier, according to FreightWatch’s annual review of cargo theft trends. Altogether, thieves stole 859 truckloads in 2009, up from 767 loads in 2008 and 672 in 2007, the group noted – averaging out to 72 cargo thefts per month last year... Electronics represented the number-one stolen goods category in 2009, according to FreightWatch’s figures, numbering 196 thefts. That represents 23% of all cargo thefts recorded last year. Food and drink came in second at 20%, with home and garden items third, presenting 10% of all cargo thefts... California, Florida, and Texas topped the list as the states with the highest risk for cargo theft in 2009, FreightWatch noted, followed by Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania... Burges said drivers need to be brought more into the loop in terms of knowing what they are hauling so they can be more proactive in guarding against theft... Burges added that, thankfully, violence still remains rare around cargo theft. Of 859 truckloads stolen last year, only 36 were recorded as “warehouse burglaries” (4.1%), with less than 2% (just 13 incidents) described as “cargo hijackings”... Cargo thieves * USA - Survey: Getting sophisticated— and bolder

A spike in violence during reported cargo thefts in the third quarter of this year is another cause for concern

Forney,TX,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Nov 2, 2009: ... According to the Supply Chain ISAC Report of Cargo Theft Activity for the third quarter of 2009 – a survey compiled and issued by LoJack Supply Chain Integrity (LoJack SCI) – carrier terminals and yards continued to be the number one area where thefts take place. That suggest thieves are becoming more emboldened – seeking out vehicles and their cargo even when they are secured with fencing and surveillance systems – and targeting very specific loads vs. simply pursuing “opportunistic” thefts, the company said... Thefts from “unsecured areas” including truckstops, parking lots (23), streets/highways (19) and other (1) combined for a total of 73 incidents or 42% of the total thefts for the third-quarter incidents. Facilities, including warehouses and store locations, found themselves targeted for theft activity, with nine and six cargo thefts reported, respectively... Food returned to the number-one slot as the most frequently targeted commodity after having fallen to the third position in the second-quarter findings, said LoJack SCI. Consumer electronics took the second spot this quarter...
