TIRES' MAKER * USA - Michelin marks million X One tire milestone

Greenville,SC,USA -Fleet Owner, by Wendy Leavitt -Oct 4, 2010: -- Michelin Americas Truck Tires customers from the U.S., Canada and Mexico; business partners; and members of the press gathered here last week to celebrate the production of the one millionth Michelin X One tire. Introduced in 2000 the wide single tire line has since expanded to include a variety of X One tires for different applications and vehicle types... According to Michelin, fleets have gained up to 10% in fuel efficiency thanks to the X One tires, resulting in more than 63 million gals. of fuel saved. This translates into 639,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions that did not enter the atmosphere. For a trucking fleet with 1,000 trucks, fitting X One tires can lead to a potential savings of 17,000 metric tons of CO2 of emissions per year, or the equivalent of removing 3,400 cars from the road, the company said...


* NHTSA Proposes New Truck-Tire Standards

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics -5 Oct 2010: -- The Department of Transportation has proposed changes to heavy-duty truck tire safety standards, the first such proposal in 37 years...   Proposed steps include a more stringent endurance test, a new high speed-test for some heavy truck tires and required labels with a tire’s maximum speed rating, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said...   The rule would affect tire standards for commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 10,000 pounds. NHTSA is a DOT agency...   For the past eight years, NHTSA has been studying truck tires while it decided what rules to propose. For example, the test speed for tires will be increased between 25% and 67%, depending on tires’ maximum operating speed...

Most everyone knows it's critical to have tires properly inflated to enhance vehicle performance and safety, get longer tire life and increase gas mileage

Its boast is using nitrogen for tire inflation with its UltraFill High-Purity Nitrogen Tire Inflation System. Available commercially and for individual consumers (I'm awaiting pricing information), the company makes a long list of reasons for the unit's use: ... Filling up with nitrogen can be surprisingly expensive. Prices of $3 to $5 per tire are typical but $10 per tire isn't uncommon. Some gas stations still offer compressed air (which is about 78% nitrogen) free of charge while others charge 25 cents for a minute or so of inflation time...

Chinese tires * USA - Questioned over potentially dangerous defect

New York,NY,USA -The Wall Street Journal/Land Line Magazine -June 26, 2007: -- There hasn’t been an official recall, but reported that nearly 1 million car tires that were made in China and sold in the U.S. could be dangerously defective... Two people were killed in summer 2006 when tread on a steel-belted radial allegedly separated, causing a van to crash... Federal officials told the Journal the problem is that at least some of the tires lack a key feature designed to make tires more durable... The tires in question are sold under the brand names Westlake, Telluride, Compass and YKS...

Tires * USA - Florida mulls banning retreads on trucks

Tallahassee,Fl,USA -Today's Trucking -31 Jan 2007 - The Tire Retread Information Bureau (TRIB) has responded to a bill introduced by Florida State Senator Victor D. Crist that would prohibit the use of retreaded tires on most commercial vehicles on Florida highways... The state bill, S912, "prohibits the use of recapped or retreaded tires on truck tractors, pole trailers or semi-trailers operated on public roads, streets, or highways of this state." If approved, the ban would take effect July 1, 2007, according to Harvey Brodsky, managing director of TRIB..."We believe this bill would greatly impede the retread and trucking industry in Florida and would create havoc with out of state trucks coming into Florida," Brodsky wrote in an email to Crist...
