* USA - Cooper Tire buys stake in Chinese tire make
--- Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. said Thursday it has completed its $87 million purchase of a joint venture with a truck and bus tiremaker in China... Cooper’s 65 percent owner interest in Qingdao Ge Rui Da Rubber Co. (GRT) will increase Cooper’s production of truck and bus tires... It will produce truck and bus tires for Cooper’s customers in North America, Asia and elsewhere... Two years ago, Cooper’s former Chinese partner, Chengshan Group, bought Cooper’s 65 percent ownership in a huge plant for $284.5 million. Cooper and Chengshan had a falling out over the failed attempt by Apollo Tyres of India to buy Cooper in 2013...

* DC - USW says tariffs prove Chinese tire makers are benefitting unfairly

 --- The United Steelworkers (USW) union says the preliminary decision by the U.S. Department of Commerce to levy tariffs on truck and bus tires from China is confirmation that the domestic industry is being harmed by those foreign imports... The USW filed the initial petition on Jan. 29 that instigated the trade investigation... In a statement released shortly after the DOC announced its determination on June 29, Leo Gerard, president of USW International, said, The DOC has yet to issue its preliminary determination in whether truck and bus tires from China are being dumped in the U.S. That ruling is expected Aug. 26... The USW represents 6,000 workers at five facilities in the U.S. that account for more than two-thirds of domestic capacity to produce truck and bus tires. The tire production facilities are operated by Bridgestone Americas Inc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Sumitomo Rubber USA LLC, and they are located in LaVergne and Warren County, Tenn.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Danville, Va.; and Topeka, Kan...

* Georgia - Italian tire maker Pirelli to begin serving commercial truck, bus markets in U.S., Canada

-- Founded in Milan in 1872, in its 144-year history Pirelli has become one of the world's largest tire manufacturers, with a focus in the high end range... The noted Italian tire maker Pirelli said today it plans to begin serving the commercial truck and bus markets in the United States and Canada through a new entity, TP Commercial Solutions LLC, which is dedicated to these markets... The move represents an expansion into North America of Pirelli’s industrial business unit, currently headed at the group level by Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera. The unit supplies commercial truck tires and fleet solutions to the global market... TIRE INFLATION SYSTEM * USA: More than 100 fleets now using Halo one

* Tennessee - The Halo Tire Inflator improved fuel economy by 1.1% and extended tire life by 14.4%


-- Aperia Technologies says its Halo Tire Inflator is now being used by more than 100 fleets... The system bolts onto truck and trailer wheels and generates its power to adjust tire inflation pressures through the rotational movement of the wheel. It does not tap into truck or trailer air systems... Josh Carter, CEO of Aperia, said that fleets have conducted comprehensive independent testing before deploying the system. More than 50 fleet tests have been conducted, he said... To facilitate fleet testing, Aperia offers a wireless data acquisition system that can be easily installed to monitor tire pressures and the device’s performance. One test indicated proper tire inflation pressures were maintained over a 100-day period while tires without the Halo installed lost as much as two psi per week on average. Another fleet found the Halo improved fuel economy by 1.1% and extended tire life by 14.4%...

* Delhi - Tyre makers follow Chinese trail with cheap, no-warranty radials


-- Tyre makers in India are trying to beat the Chinese at their own game... Local manufacturers of truck and bus radials (TBRs) are cutting prices and introducing tyres without warranty to counter the avalanche of tyre imports, two people familiar with the matter said... The Indian tyre industry has cut TBR prices by 10-15%... A depreciating yuan will make Chinese imports even more competitive, which can be offset partially by a depreciating rupee, said Mahantesh Sabarad, deputy head of research, SBI Cap Securities Ltd. ... To be sure, traders of Chinese tyres typically pay in dollars. If rupee depreciates, it takes the large chunk of profits away from traders. The trader bears the depreciation risk...

-- Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. and Fate, the leading Argentine tire manufacturer and a global exporter, plan to work together, the companies reported... Initially, Fate will become a distributor of Cooper-branded passenger, light truck and sport utility vehicle tires in Argentina, complementing Fate’s existing product portfolio. Over time, the two companies may also work together on a variety of potential cooperative ventures including tire production and sales arrangements, and possible cooperation on research and development activities... * France - Michelin to close several European tire facilities

-- Michelin is set to close a number of tire production facilities in the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany, cutting more than 1,600 jobs and postponing a project to add earthmover tire capacity in India... The French tire maker said the decision to consolidate the businesses was in response to slowdown in the European new and retread truck tires market... The tire maker will reorganize activities in the United Kingdom and in Italy, which in addition to site closures, will include an investment of $290 million to modernize production and the logistics network in these countries...

* Mumbai - Tyre makers stare at lower revenue as Chinese imports soar 

-- The continuing massive jump in cheap imports of tyres, especially those of buses and trucks, from China, which rose 138 per cent in the first quarter, may lead to a revenue decline for domestic tyre manufacturers, says a report... These are priced 25 per cent lower than the domestically produced ones, it said... The import volume of tyres in truck & bus (T&B) and two-wheeler segments rose 25.3 per cent and 120.5 per cent, respectively, in the first quarter of this year on an annual basis... Out of the above, of the particular concern is the rise in imports in the T&B segment which accounts for around 60 per cent of domestic tyre industry's revenue, India Ratings said in a report on Monday...

TIRES MAKER * USA: Yokohama's opens first U.S tire plant

* Mississippi - Yokohama takes aim at North American

-- Yokohama Tire this week celebrated the opening of its new US$300 million, one million square foot commercial truck tire facility in West Point, MS... As of now, the company has hired more than 260 employees and plans to eventually reach 500. Constructed on more than 500 acres of land, the plant houses manufacturing, warehousing and operations facilities, and will produce up to one million tires annually when running at full capacity... Currently, most of the commercial truck tires Yokohama sells in North America are sourced from its plant in Thailand. Some production is drawn from Japan as well as from the GTY Tire Co. plant in Mount Vernon, IL, that was set up back in 1988 to jointly produce General, Toyo and Yokohama truck tires...

* Italy - ChemChina to buy Italian tyre maker Pirelli in $7.7 bln deal

  -- China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) agreed on Sunday to buy tyre maker Pirelli in a 7.1 billion euro ($7.7 billion) deal that will place one of the symbols of Italy's manufacturing industry in Chinese hands. It will give ChemChina access to technology to make premium tyres, which can be sold at higher margins, and give the Italian company a larger presence in the huge Chinese market... ChemChina's tyre making unit China National Tire &Rubber will first buy the 26.2 percent Italian holding firm Camfin owns in Pirelli and will then launch a mandatory takeover bid for the rest... The offer will be launched at 15 euros per share, valuing the group at 7.1 billion euros excluding net debt of almost 1 billion euros at the end of 2014. The ChemChina unit also envisages taking the world's fifth-largest tyre maker private... Excluding the financial sector, Italy is the second-biggest acquisition market for China in Europe and fifth-largest worldwide with 10 deals completed since the start of 2014, according to Thomson Reuters data... * Germany - Continental's “driver focus” concept fights driver distraction with LEDs

Continental has come up with an electronic version of that watchful passenger – it’s a driver assistance system that uses LEDs to alert zoned-out drivers to danger... The LEDs are integrated into a continuous lighting strip that goes all the way around the interior of the car – its individual sections can be selectively illuminated as needed. Along with those LEDs, the “driver focus” system also incorporates a steering column-mounted infrared camera, that looks back at the driver’s face. By analyzing real-time video of the driver’s head and eye movements, an on-board computer is able to tell where they’re looking, and if they’re showing signs of fatigue... Using existing commercially-available driver assistance technologies, the system is additionally able to monitor traffic conditions around the car. In particular, it’s able to detect if the car is drifting out of its lane, if another vehicle suddenly enters its path, or if it’s getting too close to the vehicle it’s following... Should any of these things occur, the system then checks the steering column camera to see if the driver is looking in the direction of the problem. If they aren’t, the system gets their attention by illuminating a section of the LED strip, in the direction that the driver should be looking...


* Germany - Intelligent tire sensors from Continental will detect vehicle weight

* Japan - Bridgestone may extend cuts in production amid low Europe demand 

Chuo-ku,Tokyo,Japan -Bloomberg News/The Detroit News, by Anna Mukai and Yasumasa Song -June 21, 2012: -- Bridgestone Corp., the world's biggest maker of tires, may extend output cuts in the second half as Europe's debt crisis and China's slowdown curb demand... The Japanese tiremaker is concerned that Europe's turmoil may impact other markets such as China, depressing demand for its products even as it targets a record operating profit ratio this year. In Europe, the company reduced production through the second quarter by 20 percent on lower-than-expected demand... Europe contributed 14 percent of Bridgestone's revenue last year, while Japan accounted for 23 percent...

* Continental to build new tech center in Salto, Brazil


Hanover, Germany -In Auto News (Romania) -21 Nov 2011:  --  Continental AG, internally often called Conti, the German manufacturer of tires and other automotive related systems on Tuesday announced that will invest $12.9m in a new Technical and Research Center that will be built in the Salto Industrial Park, Brazil...  The technical center is expected to be completed by the middle of next year and add fifty direct and indirect new jobs...  According to the Hanover based company, the new facility will expand its capabilities for testing emission, homologation and calibration on gasoline and diesel engines...

Wayne,NJ,USA -Modern Tire Dealer -June 25, 2009: -- Hankook Tire America Corp. has unveiled its e3 (or e-Cubed) Technology for medium truck tires... "The e3 designation is designed to help dealers and customers understand the advanced technology behind its commercial tires, delivered across three areas: energy, economy and environment," say Hankook officials... The technology is designed to "increase fuel economy (energy), allow for improved fuel savings and wear performance (economy)... (and) minimize harmful carbon dioxide discharge (environment)."... * NitrogenMan Nitrogen Tire Inflation Now Available to Fleet Vehicles and Trucking Companies

Phoenix.AZ,USA -The Auto Channel -24 June 2009: -- Last week, NitrogenMan completed an installation for Safeway grocery stores to fill the tires in their Tempe-based truck fleet with Nitrogen in an effort to reduce road calls due to tire failures. Safeway plans on having its fleet of 320 trailers and 80 tractors converted by August... Nitrogen tire inflation tests have proven up to a 40% longer tread life of tires because they run cooler and maintain a more consistent tire pressure in spite of fluctuations in outside temperature, thereby reducing maintenance and blowouts... For trucks and fleet vehicles, the key value of Nitrogen tire inflation is in the fuel economy, consistent tire pressure and more even tire wear resulting in the extended life of the tire...
