WEATHER & TRUCKING * USA: Getting advance warning

* DC - Telematics weather infos for trucking

--- Any fleet knows that bad weather can torpedo delivery times while putting cargo, equipment, and the lives of truck drivers at risk. That’s why there’s been a push in recent years to plug real-time weather information into trucking telematics so routes can be adjusted in case heavy rain, blizzards, and other inclement conditions make certain roadways too dangerous to traverse... But real-time weather-data can also be used to aid fleets in accident reconstruction and crash-related insurance claims as well – expanding the potential return on investment (ROI) for such technology... About heavy rain, high winds, and other severe weather not only keeps freight on time and drivers safe, but can prove vital in crash reconstruction efforts. However, speed and truck-sensor measured data is only meaningful with the proper context – particularly in terms of the weather and road conditions at the time of the incident. Painting the full picture takes claim validations to a new level, leveraging data to make decisions – not opinions...

HELP BOOST TRUCKING EFFICIENCY * USA: By ALK technologies

* New Jersey - Optimizing trucking through more real-time information

--- ALK believes a combination of technological trend lines can help boost trucking efficiency and safety... To aid in that effort, he noted that ALK is looking at the ability to create “street maps” within freight yards, to help optimize freight flows within them... Dan Popkin, senior vice president of enterprise solutions for ALK Technologies, also noted that inadequate infrastructure is restricting freight efficiency as well, as: 9.6% of U.S. bridges are deficient and 11.3% of bridges had their load limits reduced... That’s why ALK is looking at the possible use of crowdsourcing to improve real-time mapping connections; to leverage customer data to do a better job of creating routes and do it faster as well...

* India and * China: Stepping up their games

* Asia - GPS Technology means changes for road haulage freight and logistics in

--- A quick look at the latest advances in Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and its relevance to the logistics industry sees serious advances in India with the first ever GPS monitored road haulage movement between India and Bangladesh. The initial trial of the Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) Motor Vehicles Agreement whereby vehicles can enter any of the four nations’ territory without the need to tranship goods from one country’s truck to another, has now been successfully undertaken... Earlier this month a truck arrived in Delhi having left from Bangladesh passing through the Customs posts en route without a hitch. The system saw the vehicle electronically tracked from Dhaka passing through West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, UP and Haryana until upon arrival at the Customs post in New Delhi. Under the protocols of the system the vehicle was sealed electronically with the authorities alerted every time the cargo doors were opened...

Freight communication is going digital * USA

* California - Digitized trucking to rely on precision mapping, smart roads and on-board analytics

--- Trucking companies are increasingly investing in intelligent tracking technologies that allow shippers and carriers to better monitor and manage drivers, vehicles and their cargo... In the near term, this means better efficiency, safety and savings, according to proponents... But with even the physical infrastructure starting to communicate with vehicles, some say that the roads and everything on them are on the verge of full automation... At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, auto supplier Continental Automotive demonstrated its eHorizon sensor system. Using three-dimensional maps crowd-sourced with real-time topographic data and GPS signals, vehicles fitted with eHorizon on Las Vegas roads adapted their driving styles to upcoming hills, dips and curves... But heavy consolidation among freight companies makes industrywide digital networking difficult. Developing common, compatible data formats is a tall order when the industry is so fragmented... New regulation from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires interstate truckers to switch from paper logs of driving hours and instead install electronic logging devices... The agency predicts that the rule, which enforces limits on driving time to prevent fatigue, will affect 3 million drivers and save an average of 26 lives a year while preventing 562 injuries... “The small guys not only run more hours but also at faster speeds than is legal,” Larkin said. “You have to push the safety envelope to survive, which is kind of sad” ...

TRUCKING TESTS * USA: To measure truckers' wait times

* NY / NJ - Port truckers testing tech that could lead to hourly surcharges

-- Port truckers at the Port of New York and New Jersey will soon test ways to measure their wait times both inside and outside container terminal gates, providing visibility that could be the basis of an hourly surcharge to drayage customers... The information provided by the use of a number of applications and sources will allow truckers to show their customers detailed records of their waiting times at the second-busiest U.S. gateway for containers... Over the coming weeks the Association of Bi-State Motor Carriers will review a number of options that can track turn and wait times in the port, the association said... While there are already metrics for how long trucks wait inside terminals, the inability of truckers to track and record their waiting times outside terminal gates, and bill customers, has been a source of frustration for harbor drivers. By providing the statistical groundwork for an hourly surcharge for the time truckers spend waiting to enter a terminal, drivers could greatly increase their earning potential, Edisson Villacis, who heads up the PDA, said...

DRONES & DRIVERLESS TRUCKS * UK: Royal Mail wants to use they

* England - Chief executive Moya Greene said the modern technology requires less manpower and could improve the service

-- Letters and parcels could soon be moved around the country by driverless vans or delivered to your door by drone, according to Royal Mail’s chief executive Moya Greene... US tech giants Amazon and Google have been experimenting with drone deliveries, while Swiss Post has actually started delivering parcels with pilotless aircraft... Now, Royal Mail is looking at following suit. Those in the countryside are likely to be the first to experience the service, Ms Greene told the CBI's annual conference, if the plans do materialise... She added that Royal Mail is still able to innovate despite its enormous size, the burden of regulation and its very long history...

TECHNO TRUCKING * USA: A new solution for trucking Cos.

* Georgia - TIEMAC Is a SaaS platform for the trucking industry

-- For an industry generating $650 billion a year in revenue, its surprising how little innovation there is in the trucking business. Launched at last year’s TC Atlanta Meetup, TIEMAC is trying to buck this trend with its end-to-end cloud-based solution for trucking companies... The platform offers real-time tracking technology that allows a trucking company to track and monitor every aspect of its fleet... This is accomplished by connecting a GPS and LTE-enabled diagnostic device to the truck’s CAN-Bus port. Data is then collected and sent to the cloud, allowing trucking companies to remotely monitor and manages vehicle loads and drivers, as well as automatically performs invoicing and cost control... The company’s software solution comprises of different modules that monitor things like load and dispatch, invoice management, driver management, and more. When combined, these modules allow trucking companies to essentially monitor every aspect of the business...

TRUCKING REVOLUTION * USA: Uber-Style platforms

* Nevada - Survey reveals shared economy platforms leading Uber-Style trucking revolution

-- On the Move Systems (OMVS) notes a new survey is forecasting that trucking will soon see an Uber-style transformation, where shared economy platforms and apps, like the one now under development by OMVS, will play a major role in operations and revenue-generation. Indeed, by 2025, survey authors Frost & Sullivan boldly predict such platforms will generate $26.4 billion in freight movement revenues... The biggest advantage online, on-demand platforms offer, the study said, is route optimization. This advantage will permit companies to more effectively utilize equipment and human resources to ensure each mile a truck is driven produces revenue instead of hauling an empty trailer...
