RESEARCH * USA - Want Teens to Stay Off the Phone While Driving?

New Research Shows A Positive Approach May Be Best

Philadelphia,PENN,USA -PRNewswire/USNewswire -June 30, 2010: -- New research from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and State Farm® links teens' positive and negative beliefs about not using a cell phone while driving with their likelihood to engage in cell phone use behind the wheel. The findings, based on the nationally-representative National Young Driver Survey (NYDS) of more than 5,500 teenagers, are published today in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Accident Analysis and Prevention... This research indicates that adults should emphasize with teens the positive effects of staying off the phone while driving, rather than highlight potential negative consequences of cell phone use while driving... Teens in the study were asked to share the positive and negative effects of refraining from cell phone use while driving. When asked, teens that seldom use cell phones while driving tended to cite positive motivators. Teens that frequently use cell phones while driving tended to refer most to the drawbacks of not using a cell phone while driving. In comparing the two groups, the findings showed that positive messages outweighed negative messages in breaking through with teens on cell phone practices while driving...

R & D * UK - Auto bodywork composite doubles as a battery

The future for the Hybrid car looks bright... and batteries are definitely included

London,UK -The Imperial College (PR), by Tannith Cattermole -February 7, 2010: -- The problem is clear. Hybrid cars and EVs rely on batteries for power, but batteries are bulky and heavy, causing the car to use up more energy. But what if a car's bodywork was made of a strong, lightweight material that could store and discharge electrical energy just as a conventional battery does?... Imperial College has been working on the idea as part of a €3.4 million 3 year European Union-funded project which includes researchers from a number of European partners, including automotive firm Volvo... The prototype material is a composite of carbon fibers and a polymer resin which can store and discharge large amounts of energy much faster than conventional batteries. Unlike these there is little degradation in the material over time because there is no chemical process involved, and this also aids more rapid recharging. It is lightweight and strong enough to make car body parts, and could be plugged into the household power supply for recharging... Researchers say the next stage is to further develop the composite in order to store more energy... TRUCKING & CONSUMERS * USA - ATA: 'Climate laws will hurt trucking, consumers'

Climate change legislation will impose significant costs on both the American trucking industry and American consumers

Arlington,VA,,USA -MTD -20 July 2009: -- ... The American Trucking Associations (ATA) recently told at the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works... Ray Kuntz, chairman of the ATA's executive committee, said that "any substantial cost increases imposed directly or indirectly on trucks by climate change legislation will curtail the delivery of vital consumer goods across the nation such as food, medicine and clothing"... According to ATA research, a one cent increase in the average price of diesel costs the trucking industry an additional $390 million in fuel expenses. "Petroleum suppliers indicate that climate change legislation could increase the cost of gasoline by 77 cents per gallon and 88 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. As trucking companies struggle with already miniscule margins, additional costs for fuel would be passed on to shippers of goods and materials, and ultimately, to consumers"...

RESEARCH * USA - 65 percent of truck fleets have only 1 tractor

New York,NY,USA -The Trucker News Services -12 June 2009: ... Wolfe Research says that, according to the Department of Transportation, 65 percent of tractor fleets are single-truck operations, but these account for just 17 percent of the tractors on the road... On the flip side, Wolfe said, just 0.3 percent of fleets have greater than 100 trucks, but these larger fleets account for 31 percent of the tractors on the road... It found 487,649 fleets in the DOT database with 455,373 of those having six or fewer trucks... Of the 1,846,076 Class 8 registered with the DOT, 713,631 are operated by fleets with six or fewer trucks... Of the total number of fleets, only 1,310 fall in the large fleet category with 101 or more trucks... Only 77 fleets have 1,000 or more trucks... The data includes Class 8 over-the-road tractors, but exclude the larger population of straight trucks, Wolfe said... RESEARCH * The Netherlands - Lorries reportedly dirtier than originally thought

Amsterdam,Holland -Radio Netherlands -12 January 2009: -- UTC Research by non-profit environmental research and consultancy organisation CE Delft says lorries are responsible for more environmental damage and more traffic jams than previously thought... CE Delft expects that over the coming years carbon dioxide emissions from lorries will increase substantially despite all efforts and promises to achieve a reduction... Lorries are held responsible for 30 percent of all traffic jams, even though they constitute only 3 percent of all vehicles on the road... The researchers also argue that lorries cause twice as many traffic deaths compared to passenger cars... The transport sector says it is not impressed by the report. In a reaction, branch organisations TLN and EVO said the report was "strongly biased", adding that it did no justice to the enormous progress made by the transport sector.

RESEARCH * UK - Texting While Driving 'More Dangerous Than Drugs or Alcohol'

London,UK -Agence France Presse/ITS America, by Alison Dinmore -18 Sept 2008: -- New research suggests that texting while driving is more hazardous than driving under the influence or drugs or alcohol. The research, conducted by Transport Research Laboratory for the RAC Foundation, used a simulator to study 17 drivers between the ages of 17 and 24. It found that reaction time decreased by 35 percent when test subjects were typing or reading text messages while driving, as opposed to 21 percent when they were under the influence of cannabis and 12 percent at the legal alcohol limit... The study revealed that steering control worsened by 91 percent for individuals who were preoccupied with text messaging, versus 35 percent when cannabis was a factor. The research also found that people distracted by text messages had a harder time keeping safe distances from other vehicles and often strayed from their lanes...
