MARKETING NEWS * USA - S. California's Emissions Rules Could Boost New Truck Sales

Long Beach,CAL,USA -The Long Beach Press-Telegram -23 June 2007: -- A push for lower emissions from heavy-duty trucks, coupled with grants from state and localities in order to meet Southern California’s air-quality standards, are prompting interest in and sales of new trucks in the region... New air quality regulations have made emissions a prime feature for the estimated 14,000 drivers hauling goods in and out of the sprawling Long Beach-Los Angeles seaport... Under pressure from community groups concerned about pollution, port commissioners are seeking to ban access to marine terminals by the most-polluting rigs — those built before 1990 — starting Jan. 1... Economists put the cost of such a fleet turnover at more than $1.5 billion, nearly half of which is expected to come from grants provided by public agencies...

Now not a lot of people know this, but according to independent research conducted last year on behalf of Michelin, 83% of the UK population recognise the Michelin Man. Good old André Michelin certainly hit on a winner when he came up with ‘Bibendum’ (that’s the Michelin man to you and me) way back in 1888. It seems that André (a trained artist), reckoned that a stack of tyres would resemble a man if it had arms. And... a marketing legend was born...
