With Vusion’s new fuel theft detection capability and a PeopleNet onboard computer connected to the vehicle’s J1939 bus, fleets will be able to track pre- and post-transaction fuel tank levels without the cost of additional hardware. The tank data is integrated with fuel purchase data for verification that the entire fuel purchase was pumped into the authorized truck’s tanks...

Crime falls * UK - At NYK Logistics

A wide-spread security tightening programme

Northampton,UK -Road Transport, by Joanna Bourke -20 September 2010: -- NYK Logistics UK says its recorded incidents of crime have dropped substantially in the past three-years... Mark Harvey, head of group security and investigations at NYK, tells that the logistics giant has implemented the following since 2007:
* a central security control room with access to all CCTV footage across the UK network;
* an online reporting system for all employees to record any incidents or suspicions;
* personal alarms in trucks for drivers to alert the company and police of any crimes;
* driver training in securing vehicles, and what to do in the case of a hijack;
* telematics which ring mark any crime hotspots staff should avoid...
Harvey says thefts by deception, hijacks and more organised criminal gangs were factors behind the three-year ramp-up in security provision...

BORDER TROUBLES * MEXICO / USA - Cartel violence spikes in Nuevo Laredo

In 2008 alone, 6,290 murders were attributed to fighting between the factions of organized crime. These factions are fighting for control over the drug routes to the United States, the world's biggest consumer of drugs. In addition, other illicit, million-dollars businesses - like human trafficking and kidnapping - are also expanding, even beyond Mexico's borders. Nuevo Laredo,MEX -eTrucker -23 July 2010: -- Drivers and carriers operating in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, should be on alert after days of cartel gun battles there, logistics security firm FreightWatch International said Friday, July 23... Those with operations in Nuevo Laredo should consider adjusting or suspending them until security improves, said FreightWatch spokesman, Dan Burges. Some of the street battles included use of grenades, according to news reports. Many businesses remained closed Friday, with estimates as high as 90 percent of business closed, Burges said... The U.S. State Department has warned U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Nuevo Laredo, or remain indoors until law enforcement deems the town to be safe... In February, border crossings near Nuevo Laredo were closed briefly due to cartel violence...

Truck Crime * UK - DfT makes progress on

London,UK -Road Transport, by Steve Hobson -9 September 2009: -- The DfT is to issue an action plan on secure truck parking in late October or early November as part of a joint initiative with the Home Office to reduce truck theft... The latest DfT draft plan will cover key issues such as overcoming planning hurdles to the development of more secure sites, identifying where secure truck parks are required, improving signage and allowing trucks onto park and ride sites overnight... The DfT research will support the European Union LABEL initiative to establish a certification system for safe truck parking areas across Europe. Crime Fighting * UK - TruckPol unveils three-year plan

London,UK -Road Transport, by Joanna Bourke -12 August 2009: -- Detective Constable, Alan Soames, the new head of freight crime fighting body TruckPol, has unveiled his three-year strategy to strengthen the division... Soames joined TruckPol in February, but it was only in June that the Home Office guaranteed its future by pledging £50,000 in funding. Speaking exclusively to Commercial Motor, Soames, who was an HGV driver for 13 years, has outlined his plans for the next three years at TruckPol to ensure its future is not placed into doubt again:

* Year 1 - spreading the word...
* Year 2 - get more active...
* Year 3 - cracking down on crime...
