Hendersonville,TN,USA -TruckExec, by Joe White -28 Aug 2008: -- Our members represent arguably the largest niche (by carrier) in the trucking industry, i-e., for-hire, full truckload, long haul companies with fewer than 100 power units. Generally speaking, most of them have a simple operating plan that operates on a weekly cycle. Their trucks and drivers are outbound on Sunday evening or Monday morning and back on Friday evening in time for the local high school football game. The trucks go through the maintenance shop on Saturday while the driver restarts with family time... During the Monday through Friday road week, the goal of the company is secure for the truck and the driver, the maximum number of loaded miles with a profitable rate and a fuel surcharge that can be run safely and legally. Our small carriers cannot grow or prosper without giving their drivers consistent loaded miles, and consistent weekend family time, plus consistent weekly maintenance on their rolling stock... Since they must run every week to retain customers and drivers, they must buy over-the-road diesel fuel no matter what the price. Fuel surcharges have helped mitigate the recent unprecedented eighteen month movement of fuel, but there is always a time lag that is seldom recovered and, no one collects a fuel surcharge 100% of the time. Needless to say, the last eighteen months have not been profitable ones for any segment of the trucking business for this reason... Beginning in June however, I feel the dynamics in the market showed some signs of changing for the better...

Trucker Conference * USA - Underway in Great Falls

The struggling national economy has made 2008 a tough year on the trucking industry as 1,900 trucking companies have shut down since the start of the year

Missoula,MT,USA -KPAX/TV -Aug 21, 2008: -- ... The annual Montana Motor Carriers Conference kicked off on Wednesday in Great Falls and the Chairman of the American Truckers Association spoke about the how companies are reducing their fuel usage... Ray Kuntz is the first Montana-native to serve as chair for the national group, and says the high price of fuel, increasing tolls, and not enough money in the federal Highway Bill are among the problems facing the country's nearly nine million motor carriers...

CORPORATIVE NEWS * USA - ATA loses federal Highway Watch grant

Washington,DC,USA -eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -22 May 2008: -- The American Trucking Associations’ Highway Watch program did not receive a Department of Homeland Security grant for the first time since the department began funding the program in 2004... As a result of Congressional direction in the 2008 Consolidated Appropriations Act, the DHS trucking security $15.5 million grant was awarded as a competitive grant for the first time this year... The contract went to HMS Company, headquartered in Washington D.C., it provides management, technical, security, training and administrative services to government, non-profit and private sector clients... Funding awards are meant to strengthen security at ports, transit, trucking and intercity bus systems. Money provided will be used to prevent, protect against, respond to and recover from terrorist attacks, major disasters and other emergencies...
