Biofuel Powered Trucks * Sweden - Volvo Trucks To Field-Test Bio-DME



Stockholm,Sweden -The Motor Report (Melbourne,VIC,Australia) -Oct 16, 2009: -- Earlier this year, the Swedish Government announced plans to have the country free of its oil dependency by 2030... It is an undertaking that affects more than just the car industry. Volvo Trucks has this week responded with the announcement of field tests that will have 14 of its trucks running on Bio-DME, an energy-rich biofuel... Made from black liquor, a by-product of the pulp industry, Bio-DME is a clean and energy-efficient fuel that results from the black liquor’s gasification... BIODIESEL * Sweden - Södra running long-term biodiesel test

Södra has commenced a two-year project in which RME biodiesel, rape methyl ether, is being tested in six vehicles

Växjö Suecia -Lesprom Network (Moscow,Russia) -Jul 15, 2009: -- The project aims to show the environmental and economic benefits of a transition to RME biodiesel as well as its effect on the actual vehicles, the company reports... The fuel meets the EN14214 standard and is produced and delivered by Energigårdarna from its plant in Eslöv in southern Sweden. The rape is grown on local fields. Energy needed for the RME process is provided by a straw boiler along with on-site windpower, and the fuel is also used in the vehicles that deliver RME to filling stations... The test began in January this year when the first vehicles were filled with 100% RME. Three Södra lorries are involved in the project, two Scania and one Volvo. Three fork-lift trucks are also included in the project in conjunction with Volvo Penta. The six vehicles operate in the Mörrum, Älmhult, Ullared and Värö districts, all within reasonable distance for filling with the RME diesel which is produced locally in Skåne...

BIODIESEL * Europe - Neste biodiesel passes Mercedes truck test

Berlin,Germany -Cnet News, by Candace Lombardi -10 June 2009: -- In Berlin on Tuesday, Daimler and Finnish oil company Neste Oil announced the results of a year-long pilot project in which 14 Mercedes trucks and buses ran on nothing but sustainable biodiesel for one year... Specifically, five medium-duty Mercedes-Benz Atego trucks, five heavy-duty Mercedes-Benz Actros vehicles, and four Mercedes-Benz Citaro city buses were run exclusively on Neste's sustainably produced NExBTL renewable diesel fuel... The biofuel, which includes hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) made from palm oil, is something Neste has been known to be working on in order to meet its goal of "100 percent sustainably produced" oil by 2015... The result after one year was a 15 percent decrease in nitrogen oxides, and, when taking into account the entire food chain from plant cultivation to car engine use, the CO2 emissions caused by the vehicles were reduced by over 60 percent, according to project statistics provide by Neste... BIODIESEL TESTS * USA - Permaflo biodiesel weathers on Alaska’s extreme cold

Overland Park,KS,USA -Bulk Transporter -Apr 8, 2009:  -- Low temperatures may be less of a problem in the future for biodiesel users thanks to a recent research project that involved Integrity Biofuels, the Indiana Soybean Alliance, and Purdue University... Arctic testing in Alaska in early March demonstrated the viability of the Permaflo Biodiesel product that was developed through the joint effort of the three groups. Dr Bernie Tao at Purdue directed the research effort. The Indiana Soybean Alliance provided the funding. Integrity Biofuels (a division of Grammer industries Inc) produced the biodiesel for the Alaska test... Permaflo is a biodiesel product that goes through additional refining to separate saturated from unsaturated methyl esters, which have a lower cloud point. BIODIESEL TEST * Canada - Out of the cold: test results hope to boost biodiesel

Calgary,ALB,CAN -Today's Trucking -6 Feb 2009: -- The Alberta Renewable Diesel Demonstration (ARDD) was on an a mission to prove biodiesel could withstand winter temperatures in Canada, and now they have proof... The study was Canada's largest cold-weather study of renewable diesel fuels and, according to the stakeholders, have successfully demonstrated the on-road use of low level renewable diesel blends in a range of Canadian climatic conditions... The on-road demonstration, which ran from December 2007 to September 2008, put first- and second- generation renewable diesel fuels on the road in 59 long-haul commercial vehicles across Alberta... "The ARDD has confirmed the operability of low level renewable diesel blends in the cold weather conditions tested, and has provided practical information and operational experience to stakeholders in the Canadian diesel fuel industry," says John Rilett, vice-president of Climate Change Central... BIODIESEL * USA - Early findings of study show biodiesel produces significantly less CO2 emissions

Dallas,TX,USA -Truck News, by James Menzies -22 Aug 2008: -- The National Biodiesel Board (NBB) shared early results of a study on the impact biodiesel has on CO2 emissions at the Great American Trucking Show this week... Two months into a six-month pilot with California-based States Logistics, the NBB says trucks using B100 biodiesel produce 78% less CO2 emissions than those running traditional diesel. The results are being collected and analyzed by Indigenous Energy, developers of an emissions-tracking system... The NBB says biodiesel has a 3.5:1 ration of energy gained to energy use to produce it, meaning for every unit of fossil energy required to produce biodiesel, 3.5 units of energy are produced...

Biodiesel Test * USA - The 2 Million Mile Haul

IO,USA -Practical Environmentalist, by Steve Watkins -January 2, 2008: -- Iowa Central Community College and Decker Truck Line, Inc, Renewable Energy Group, Caterpillar Engine Company, the Iowa Soybean Association, the National Biodiesel Board, and the U. S. Department of Agriculture all joined together for an extensive study of the long term effects of B20 biodiesel in big trucks over a two year period... The study consists of a control group with 10 units and a matching B20 test group, for a total of 20 units (Table 1). All units have a Peterbilt chassis with C-13 Caterpillar engines (2006 model) and 9-speed transmissions. The control and test group each contain one unit with an engine that complies with the new 2007 emissions requirements. All units are running with flatbed trailers on matched routes to either Minneapolis or Chicago. The control group uses 100% #2 petroleum diesel whereas the B20 test group uses a blend of 20% soy biodiesel with 80% #2 petroleum diesel. Data is routinely collected and analyzed for fuel efficiency, maintenance records, and fuel quality. At the conclusion of the study, it is anticipated that several control and test engines will be dismantled and analyzed for engine wear... So after the first year of testing things look hopeful. The reduction in efficiency was insignificant and the increased maintenance will likely be greatly reduced by better blending techniques that are being tested over this winter. Tests are scheduled to conclude in October 2008...
