VOLVO's news * Sweden: 30% saving fuel - * USA: Employees lay off

* Stockholm / Sweden  - Volvo Concept Truck cuts fuel consumption by 30 percent

--- Volvo Trucks unveiled a concept vehicle that cuts down on fuel consumption by more than 30 percent. It’s based on a Volvo FH 420 heavy-duty truck and is part of a research project aimed at creating more energy-efficient long-haul rigs... The truck’s fuel savings come from shaving 4,410 pounds from the weight of a comparable vehicle. A 40 percent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency also sliced fuel consumption... Volvo tested the model in Sweden last fall... While this vehicle will not go into production, some of its aerodynamic features are being incorporated into Volvo trucks... The project is part of a bilateral joint venture between Sweden and the U.S., with support from both the Swedish Energy Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy... The goal is to improve the efficiency of long-haul trucks by 50 percent...

* North Carolina / USA - Volvo to lay off more workers at New River Valley, VA, plant

-- Volvo Trucks North America has lowered its 2016 North American market forecast from 260,000 to 250,000, resulting in a decision to lay off more employees at the OEM’s manufacturing plant in Dublin, Virginia... A UAW union official told Roanoke, Virginia, television station WDBJ that the company was shifting from producing 120 trucks a day to 92... The layoff at the New River Valley plant will be the second announced in the past six months... Last December, Volvo said it was laying off 734 workers beginning in February... Volvo Trucks North America spokesman John Mies said, that layoff came because of a slackening demand for long-haul trucks...
