HISTORIC DECISION * Australia - Safe rates is here for owner operators

* ACT - Fighting for better rates and conditions for truckies for a long time

-- Truckies have hailed the RSRT order for owner-drivers a "historical and courageous decision"... Speaking for the National Independent Trucking Association, acting CEO Jerry Brown-Sarre released a statement following the order saying Australian motorists and their families were the winners... Mr Brown-Sarre said the decision was a milestone in Australian industrial relations history and would "reverberate in every industrial relations court in the world"... "This association on behalf of all independent contractors and Australian motorists commends the decision and the order," he said... The order means independent contractors are entitled to be paid cost recovery for all time worked in the interest of road safety... But NatRoad says the order will lead to higher freight costs and higher prices for consumers... In a statement the organisation said: "The Tribunal issued an order that mandates substantially increased minimum contact rates for some of Australia's trucking contractors" ... Meanwhile NITA does not agree. Mr Brown-Sarre said NatRoad had its chance to fight against the RSRT during the tribunal. He also said the cost increases spoken about would equate to something like 2-3cents per item...
