-- Donning signs that read "stop the abuse on truckers" and "be relevant, be heard," close to 300 container truck drivers from Mississauga, Brampton and abroad staged a protest in Peel region tonight as part of a GTA-wide strike... The strike began Tuesday, according to the Container Trucking Association of Ontario, the largest body of container trucks in the region. The association has more than 500 members... Truckers want to be regulated and classified as skilled workers, which would allow them to unionize, said association president Patrick Rhodin, adding that truckers are upset with low rates, coupled with long waiting time at rail yards and the rising costs of fuel that make maintenance and operation costs virtually unbearable, according to the association... The GTA-wide struck is expected to cause disruption at local rail yards and subsequently cause major delays in the shipping and transporting of goods. Tonight's protest was held in the parking lot of Dixie Gurdwara, at Dixie and Derry roads: “We are hurting badly," said Brampton trucker Kuldip Brar. "Truck prices and maintenance expenses have skyrocketed and our wages have gone down. How are we supposed to survive?" ...
