* Illinois - Navistar's big trucks slow to gain traction as revenue falls

-- Navistar International Corp. said regaining share in the North American truck market has been more difficult than anticipated as the truck maker on Thursday reported a 2% decline in fiscal second-quarter revenue... Navistar’s losses in the quarter were greater than expected, amid lower-than-expected revenue. The company has been slashing costs in a bid to reverse three years of losses. But the benefits from cost reductions have been muted by Navistar’s anemic truck sales, particularly for heavy-duty models weighing above 33,000 pounds... Industrywide orders for heavy-duty trucks have been at their highest levels in nearly a decade, as rising freight volumes and better fuel economy from the latest truck models have caused truckers to accelerate their purchases. However, Navistar’s share of the heavy-duty retail market in the U.S. and Canada has been stuck at about 13%, behind Volvo AB; Paccar Inc., the maker of Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks; and Daimler AG’s Freightliner unit...

* Michigan - SAF Holland unveils ultralight trailer suspension

-- For decades, trucks and trailers have used air ride technology for the comfort and safety truck drivers depend on. Air ride systems offered sizable advantages to previous mechanically based suspension systems... Improvements to combinations of metals and engineering, however, could be game changers because they are lighter, stronger and – for the professional truck drivers that command them – faster... During a two-day press event hosted in Muskegon, Mich., by suspension maker SAF Holland, company leaders unveiled the ULX40 Ultralite Slider Suspension Axle system. The new suspension system uses composite spring-ride technology that the company declined to describe in detail in order to protect its proprietary interests... The ULX40 provide the same performance as an air ride suspension without the complexity of those systems. For example, he notes there are no shock absorbers, air springs, height control valves or dock lock devices on the new suspension... The ULX40 features a 40,000 pound capacity with a 5.75-inch diameter axle, which provides an additional 20-pound weight savings per tandem...

* Kentucky - Truck assembler D & B Trucks and Equipment Sales expands its production plant

-- D & B Trucks and Equipment Sales, which builds and sells truck gliders, plans to invest $575,000 to expand its manufacturing plant in Glasgow, Kentucky. The company plants to add up to 50 new associates to its workforce in Barren County... The company purchases old or wrecked semi-trucks, deconstructs them to the framing and re-assembles them on a new chassis and shell with rebuilt engines, transmissions and clutches. These gliders are also customized with more user-friendly components than brand new trucks, which give them a competitive edge... D & B plans to add 9,600 square feet to its current 15,440-square-foot operation on Burkesville Road. The expansion, which will be completed this fall, will allow to the company to more than double its monthly production...
