* New Jersey - Number of 'active' trucking firms rises by 10,000, QualifiedCarriers says

Cassidy -Sep 14, 2014: -- The number of active “for-hire” trucking companies in the U.S. increased by nearly 10,000 in the first eight months of 2014 to 186,200... The Department of Transportation data mined by QualifiedCarriers.com indicate capacity is shifting away from the largest carriers toward smaller, regional trucking operators... Those mid-tier players are often “almost invisible” to economists and Wall Street analysts and to larger shippers that work with large truckload carriers... The number of active carriers is much smaller than the total number registered at DOT — more than 500,000. However, the number of active motor carriers has been climbing over the past few years, even as larger carriers cut the number of trucks they operate and tightened their capacity... The number of active U.S. trucking companies has increased almost 12 percent since April 2012, when was reported 166,810 active carriers. Over a 30-month period, the number of active carriers increased nearly 31,000 — a 20 percent increase in total carrier population... Many of the 10,000 companies that registered as new carriers or re-activated lapsed authority so far this year are probably owner-operators or very small companies, said Jeffrey G. Tucker, CEO of QualifiedCarriers.com, also CEO of logistics company Tucker Company Worldwide...
