* New York - Daimler Trucks profit doubles, Volvo swings back to profitability 

New York,NY,USA -Truckinginfo -April 30, 2014: -- Profit for truck, engine and carmaker Daimler AG soared in the first quarter of the year, while competitor Volvo has reported a profit following a loss a year ago... Unit sales of 108,500 vehicles in the first quarter by Daimler Trucks were 7% above the prior-year level. Revenue increased by 1% to €7.1 billion or $9.85 billion. Daimler Trucks’ earnings before interest and taxes of €341 million, or $473 million, was substantially higher than in the prior-year period at €116 million, or $161 million... Meantime, profit for rival AB Volvo of Sweden are also way up, with sales in the quarter were 65.65 billion kronor, up 13% from 58.34 billion kronor a year earlier... The company, which sells trucks and engines under the Mack and Volvo names, says truck orders worldwide fell 10% during the quarter, but were up 22% in North America. European orders fell 26% due to new emissions rules, according to the company... Worldwide, Volvo delivered a total of 47,845 trucks in the first quarter of the year, which was 25% more than in the first quarter of 2013 but 22% fewer than in the fourth quarter of 2013...

Greensboro,NC,USA -Truckinginfo -April 30, 2014: -- Mack Trucks previewed the new Mack LR series of low-entry cabover refuse trucks designed with the driver, customer and demands of the rigorous job in mind. Initially available in three-axle 6x4 configurations and powered either by diesel or natural gas, the Mack LR series will be available in 2015... The Mack LR model will be spec’d with a Mack MP7 11-liter diesel engine with 325 to 345 horsepower and torque ratings from 1,200 to 1,280 pounds-feet. The Cummins Westport ISL G natural gas engine will also be option. All LR models are will be equipped with an Allison RDS five-speed or six-speed automatic transmission... 


* Wiscosin - $ 45.5 Million DOE Contract for plug-in hybrid trucks

Waukesha,WIS,USA -Work Truck Online -April 29, 2014: -- Odyne Systems of Waukesha, Wis., and Inland Power Group of Butler, Wis., have teamed up to deliver on a $45.4 million contract from the Department of Energy, administered through the Electric Power Research Institute, to install more than 120 Odyne plug-in hybrids systems on work trucks to be deployed throughout North America... Odyne was selected for the award in the medium- and heavy-duty truck category because its plug-in hybrid system is the only one on the market that reduces fuel consumption both while driving and at the work site, enabling companies and government fleets to reduce operating costs, while also better meeting sustainability objectives. The Odyne hybrid system, featuring Johnson Controls lithium-ion batteries and a Remy advanced electric propulsion motor proven in over 2 billion road miles, can reduce fuel consumption by up to 50 percent or greater depending upon the duty cycle, lower emissions and allow large work vehicles to operate quietly at a work site... Together, Odyne Systems and Inland Power Group will be delivering some of the newest technologies to commercial truck users across the country...
