Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Sep 4, 2013: -- Ford is conducting a safety recall of 355,000 sedans from the 2005 through 2011 model year due to corrosion that could lead to loss of steering... A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website says that the vehicles involved in the recall are certain 2005 through 2011 Ford Crown Victoria (including Crown Victoria Police Interceptor units), Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car sedans... According to the NHTSA bulletin, “severe corrosion can seize the lower intermediate shaft which may cause the upper intermediate shaft to collapse and the steering column lower bearing to separate... (Photo: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee)
Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Richard Read -Aug 26, 2013: ... The Grand Cherokee found itself at the center of a contentious recall earlier this summer when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claimed that the placement of the gas tank on certain models exposed the Grand Cherokee to a greater fire risk. According to the New York Times, the 2012 model of the Grand Cherokee is now being investigated for a different fire risk -- one that seems to originate in the vehicle's headliner... NHTSA has received three complaints about fires breaking out above the sun visor on the passenger's side. Here's a clip from NHTSA's summary report (PDF): "The customers reported a burning odor and visible smoke coming from the headliner while the vehicle was being driven. This was followed by flames from the headliner itself. Customers lowered the windows in an effort to clear the smoke but this increased the fire's intensity. All three vehicles had to be extinguished with a fire extinguisher or by the fire department as they continued to burn after the vehicle was turned off. The fire also caused the sunroof to shatter in one incident, and in another the fire spread to the passenger seat when the burning sun visor fell onto the seat" ...

(Photo: 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid)
Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Richard Read -Sep 4, 2013: -- Toyota has issued two unrelated recalls today. Together, they affect more than 235,000 vehicles in the U.S. ... The first recall centers around the 2006-2010 Highlander Hybrid and the 2006-2008 Lexus RX 400h. According to Toyota, the transistors located in the inverter assemblies on those hybrid models may have been improperly manufactured. As a result, they can overheat, which will, at the very least, trigger warning lights on the instrument panel and "in most cases" force the vehicle into "limp home mode"... In more extreme circumstances, the overheating could force a shutdown of the entire hybrid system, which would bring the vehicle to a complete stop... All told, the Highlander/RX recall affects some 133,000 vehicles... Toyota's second recall involves 102,000 Lexus vehicles from the 2006-2011 model years -- specifically, the Lexus IS 350, IS 350C, and GS 350...

(Photo: 2013 Nissan Pathfinder)
Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Richard Read -Sep 4, 2013: -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a formal investigation into problems associated with the 2013 Nissan Pathfinder and 2013 Infiniti JX, those vehicles may suffer from a transmission flaw that could lead to an accident... NHTSA was tipped off to the problem via five complaints from owners, who said that their vehicles were occasionally losing power while in motion. Suspicions were also raised by a technical service bulletin that Nissan sent to dealers in July. The bulletin described how to repair leaks from a hose associated with the vehicles' continuously variable transmission... Should subsequent tests indicate that a true recall is warranted, NHTSA estimates that 110,000 vehicles would be affected...
