(Photo: German Rheinmetall MAN's headquarters)
Munich,Bavaria,Germany -The Local -4 Jun 13: -- German truck maker MAN, a unit of European car giant Volkswagen, warned Tuesday of a "significant" decline in financial performance this year due to increased provisions and the difficult situation in its engine business... The company blamed its bleak outlook on the continuing difficulties in the shipping industry, the European sovereign debt crisis as well as the poor economic situation in the Middle East... That meant the group's original profit expectations for the medium term would not be fulfilled. In addition, a tax audit had uncovered "substantial tax risks" ... Taken all the factors together, return on sales in 2013 "will fall significantly below the 2012 figure, whereas revenue will remain at the previous year's level," MAN said... In 2012, MAN booked a return on sales of 6.1 percent, with net profit of €189 million ($247 million) on sales of €15.772 billion...

* New Zealand - International: the last Kiwi truck maker, aims high

Mt Maunganui,NZ -Diesel Talk,by Chris Merlini -27 May 2013: -- The name, Intertruck Distributors, as importers for International trucks, seems reasonable enough. But a visit to their Mt Maunganui factory reveals that Intertruck Manufacturers and Distributors would be more appropriate... This is not an automotive import and distribute business model at all. It is import, assemble, add NZ specific value, and then distribute the finished heavy trucks... In a well-equipped, tidy 35,000 square foot factory, Intertruck’s business is building trucks and assembling them from complete knocked down units (CKD) imported from the United States. Just like the old days. But not out of nostalgic need, as managing director Comer Board tells... Costing $3.5 million, the plant that Board built includes state of the art bake ovens and engineering workshops with capacity to assemble 300 trucks per year. Two and half acres of land a re available on site to accommodate that expansion...

As you can see it's an eight-wheel prime-mover coupled to a 2AB quad. The load is copper concentrate, gross combination weight about 170-tonnes and the operator is CUBE who apparently took over the Giacci operation. Pete apologises for "the poor sound quality but he says it was blowing a gale at the time, hence the intrusive wind noise!” ... "AUSTRALIAN HEAVY METAL looks at the massive investment being made in the ore-bearing Pilbara region of Western Australia and at the ways in which road transport is making this huge expansion possible.
