* USA - Safety officials probe Mercedes fuel leaks in E-Class cars

Detroit,MICH,USA -Associated Press/The Detroit News -March 19, 2013: -- Federal safety regulators are investigating reports of fuel leaks in about 250,000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cars... The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Mercedes have received 533 complaints from owners about a strong odor of gasoline, mainly after refueling. The agency says fuel may be leaking from the upper part of the gas tank... 


* Michigan - Toyota recalls 209,000 FJ Cruisers

Detroit,MICH,USA -Associated Press/The Detroit News -March 15, 2013: -- Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 209,000 FJ Cruiser SUVs because their front seatbelt retractors could fall off... FJ Cruisers from the 2007 through 2013 model years are included in the recall... Toyota said the driver and front passenger seatbelts are mounted on the vehicle's rear doors. If the doors are closed forcefully over a period of time, cracks can form in the door panel around the seatbelt retractor and the retractor can become detached...


* California - Honda Pilot, Acura MDX recall deals with brake problem

Torrance,CAL,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Mar 14, 2013: -- A new recall of certain 2005 Honda Pilot SUVs, 2005 and 2006 Acura MDX luxury SUVs, and 2005 Acura RL sedans is expected to isolate a problem that may cause the brakes to trigger without warning... A notice on the Honda website details the approximate recall population of 182,600 vehicles as follows:

2005 Honda Pilot – approximately 101,000 vehicles 
2005 Acura MDX – approximately 60,000 vehicles 
2006 Acura MDX – approximately 800 vehicles 
2005 Acura RL – approximately 21,000 vehicles 

According to Honda, the problem is potential malfunctioning of the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system in affected vehicles. Specifically, if the electrical capacitor on the system’s control unit was damaged during manufacture, the VSA system could malfunction “and apply a small amount of brake force for a fraction of a second, without any input by the driver” ...


* DC - Nissan recalls 2013 Altima, Pathfinder, Leaf, Sentra, Infiniti JX35 for airbag problem

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Mar 14, 2013: -- Nissan is recalling five of its 2013 models for faulty sensors that may permanently turn off the front seat passenger airbag... A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website lists the recalled vehicles as the 2013 Nissan Altima mid-size sedan, the Pathfinder SUV, the Leaf electric car, the Sentra compact sedan, and the Infiniti JX35 SUV... Nissan has not yet determined the number of vehicles involved in the recall or the manufacture dates for those vehicles... The NHTSA bulletin and documentation from Nissan say the problem involves sensors used to determine occupant weight in the passenger seat that may have been built out of specification. Faulty sensors could cause the airbag system to malfunction and block airbag deployment in the event of a crash...

* DC - 2013 Nissan Sentra recalled for fuel tank defect

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Mar 14, 2013: -- Nissan is conducting a voluntary safety recall of a small number of 2013 Sentra compact cars because they may have fuel tank assemblies that were not properly sealed... A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected at 392. Affected vehicles were built from September 11 through October 4, 2012 at Nissan’s Aguascalientes, Mexico plant... According to Nissan documentation submitted to the NHTSA, the problem stems from a manufacturing process variation at the fuel tank supplier that has since been corrected. Due to this variation, certain Sentra small cars may have fuel tank assemblies that were improperly sealed during manufacture... Improperly sealed fuel tanks could allow a small amount of gasoline to leak from the tank when full...



* Michigan - Chrysler recalls 2,500 Dodge Challengers for fire risk

Detroit,MICH,USA -AP/The Detroit News -18 March 2013: -- Chrysler is telling owners of about 2,500 Dodge Challenger muscle cars with V-6 engines not to drive them because a short in a wiring circuit can set them on fire... Owners also are being told not to park the cars in a garage or near a structure until the problem can be fixed... The cars are from the 2013 model year and have V-6 engines. They were made during an eight-week period that ended Jan. 24... Chrysler wouldn't identify exactly where the short occurs, but said it's in a place that most owners would never see. Seven fires were reported that damaged cars, but no one was hurt, the company said in a statement...
