* North American Auto Makers Build to 97% Capacity in 2012

  Detroit,Michigan,USA -WardsAuto, by Haig Stoddard -Feb. 13, 2013: -- Last year’s rate was the highest since WardsAuto began tracking the data in 2005, well above 2011’s 83.4%, and the most recent trough year of 2009, when manufacturers built to just 51.9% of their capacity... Rising demand and inventory catch-up, resulting in more overtime and a proliferation of plants working 3-shift or 3-crew schedules, led North American light-vehicle manufacturers to build to 97.1% of their 2-shift straight-time capacity in 2012, based on a WardsAuto analysis... It was the highest rate since WardsAuto began tracking the data in 2005, well above 2011’s 83.4%, and the most recent trough year of 2009, when manufacturers built to just 51.9% of their capacity... By country, capacity utilization soared to 124.0% in Mexico in 2012, up from robust totals of 111.4% in 2011 and 102.6% in 2010. Capacity utilization in Canada reached 99.6% in 2012, compared with 80.2% the prior year. A 15.5% increase in production and one fewer plant in the system with the closure of a Ford operation in late 2011 mainly were responsible for the gain...


* Michigan - Chrysler to put diesel engines in Ram 1500 pickups

Auburn Hills,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -February 14, 2013: -- Chrysler Group LLC will begin offering diesel engines in its Ram 1500 pickups later this year... The 2014 Ram 1500, which Chrysler says will go on sale in the third quarter of 2013, will be the only half-ton truck on the market available with a small-displacement diesel... Ram will mate Chrysler's new turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 EcoDiesel engine, manufactured by VM Motori, with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Chrysler said the pairing will yield best-in-class fuel efficiency and best-in-class torque...


* DC - State gets $1.6M of 29-state Toyota settlement

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -February 15, 2013: -- Toyota Motor Corp. agreed to pay $29 million to settle allegations by 29 state attorneys general that the automaker concealed its knowledge of safety defects in accelerator pedals. The company also will agree to significant restrictions in its advertising... As part of the sudden-acceleration recalls settlement, Toyota will reimburse vehicle owners for an estimated $5 million in costs connected to recalls, including rental cars, towing bills and taxi rides, but conceded the amount could be higher. Toyota has agreed on a case-by-case basis to consider claims filed with the state attorneys general or federal agencies seeking reimbursement for owner expenses. Claims must be made within one year... The automaker is also prohibited from advertising the safety of vehicles without sound engineering and scientific data to back such claims... It's the latest fallout from the company's massive recall of millions of vehicles for sudden acceleration...


- AUTOS RECALLS -

* DC - Chrysler recalling 360,000 vehicles over fastener issue 
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -February 14, 2013: -- Chrysler Group LLC said Thursday it is recalling 360,000 SUVs and pickups sold in North America to fix rear axles that could fail... The Auburn Hills automaker said the recall expands on an earlier campaign to fix rear axles that were assembled with a fastener that can loosen. The new recall covers the 2009 Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen SUVs, 2009-11 Dodge Dakota pickups and 2009-12 Ram 1500 pickups... Dealers will install parts to secure the fastener... This expands on an initial recall of 44,000 pickups for the same issue in September... 

* DC - Chrysler recalling 3,600 Dodge Vipers over airbags
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -February 15, 2013: ... In October, Chrysler recalled more than 920,000 vehicles worldwide over the issue after 215 reports of improper airbag deployments and 71 minor injuries... The earlier recall included the 2002-03 Jeep Liberty SUV and 2002-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee... Chrysler said the electrical architecture in the Viper airbags is similar to the vehicles recalled last year. Chrysler has no reports of improper airbag deployments in the Vipers. Chrysler will notify dealers and owners this month and install a harness to prevent inadvertent airbag deployments... The recalls follow a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that was opened in October 2011...
