Unfortunately, the United States is not slated to be one of them, because the Trax would compete directly with its twin sister, the 2013 Buick Encore, and the popular Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain. So, for the foreseeable future, Windsor, Ontario, is probably the nearest place you're likely to see this mini-ute...

* Michigan / USA - Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid to have 550-mile range

Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -July 20, 2012: -- Ford Motor Co.'s new 2013 C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid is expected to have a range of 550 miles after the Dearborn automaker says it drove from Sacramento to San Diego on a single tank of gas... Ford's first plug-in hybrid, which will be available this fall, has a fuel economy equivalent 95 miles per gallon, Ford said, which includes a 20-mile driving range in electric-only mode, about double that of the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid, which gets an Environmental Protection Agency certified 11-mile driving range in electric-only mode... Driving range identifies how many miles electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles and compressed natural gas vehicles can go before recharging or refueling... The C-MAX Energi has a projected 188 horsepower and has a 2-liter, four-cylinder engine and a battery-powered electric motor...

* Europe - German autos tops in 
Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News (USA), by Christine Tierney -July 19, 2012: -- Germany's automakers are expanding their share of the flagging European car market, benefiting from sustained demand in central and eastern Europe... French and Italian carmakers, meanwhile, reported lower sales for the first half of 2012 because of weakening demand in western and southern Europe, where austerity measures have been adopted... Sales of Detroit's automakers also fell even though General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. have their regional headquarters in Germany. GM Europe's market share slipped to 8.3 percent from 8.7 percent as its sales fell 10.7 percent in January-June... Ford of Europe's share dipped to 7.7 percent from 8.0 percent as its sales fell 9.9 percent in the European market, which shrank 6.3 percent in the first half of 2012... Europe's largest carmaker Volkswagen AG expanded its share to 24.1 percent from 22.7 percent, helped by a resilient home market and solid gains at its Czech-based Skoda and Bavarian Audi brands. BMW AG and Daimler AG also increased their market share... 


* DC / USA - Chrysler, Kia lead California car sales rise 
Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -July 19, 2012: -- Auto sales are booming in California, the nation's largest auto market... California auto sales are up 22.6 percent for the first half of the year, compared with a 14.6 percent rise nationwide in the same period... Detroit's Big Three automakers have made winning more sales in California a goal. About 1 out of every 10 automobiles sold nationwide is sold in California... Chrysler brand vehicles rose 198 percent in the first half of 2012, the biggest brand increase of any retailer, followed by a 62 percent rise for Kia and 35.4 percent boost for Chrysler's Jeep brand... But Detroit's Big Three have underperformed most rivals. Their sales rose 17.6 percent in in California, while Japanese automakers were up 22.8 percent. South Korean automakers rose 26 percent. European automakers were up 13.4 percent... 



- RECALLS - 

* Michigan / USA - Ford recalls '13 Escapes over fire risks. Urges owners to stop driving SUVs

(The company is recalling 11,500 Escapes in the U.S. and Canada. The recall affects only models with 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines that were built from early April through July 11 this year)
Dearborn,Michigan,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson and Karl Henkel -July 20, 2012: -- The launch of Ford Motor Co.'s hot-selling new 2013 Escape has been dinged by a second recall in a week. The latest recall, announced Thursday, is for a faulty fuel line in some models that could split and leak gasoline, causing an underhood fire. Ford said it is recalling 11,500 2013 Escapes with the 1.6-liter engine to replace the fuel lines. Ford took the unusual step of urging owners to immediately stop driving the vehicles. Thursday's recall follows one announced Saturday, when Ford said it was calling back more than 10,000 2013 Escapes because incorrectly positioned carpet padding may interfere with braking...


* Michigan / USA - Honda recalls 172,200 U.S. vehicles to fix doors

Detroit,MICH,USA -Associated Press/The Detroit News -July 19, 2012: -- Honda is recalling 172,200 small SUVs and cars in the U.S. because the doors may not close... The recall affects 166,000 CR-V SUVs from the 2012 model year and 6,200 Acura ILX small luxury cars from the 2013 model year... Honda says that if the inside driver or passenger door handles are used at the same time as the power or manual door locks, the inner door latch may not work. This means a door may not latch, or it could latch and open when the locks are used...

* Michigan / USA - Ford using ping-pong balls to measure interior cargo space

(Ford: Instead of estimating the capacity of odd-shaped areas — like glove boxes and center consoles — inside vehicles using typical measuring devices, Ford now fills those spaces with ping-pong balls) 
Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -July 18, 2012: -- Put away the rulers and measuring tapes... At Ford Motor Co., vehicle architects say a different approach for measuring interior cargo space is more accurate than standard measuring devices... Instead of estimating the capacity of odd-shaped areas — like glove boxes and center consoles —inside vehicles using typical measuring devices, Ford now fills those spaces with ping-pong balls... The balls, which themselves have a volume of a little more than 2 cubic inches, help Ford compute slightly better accuracy when measuring volumes...

* Michigan / USA - Arbitrator rules against UAW 
Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News,by Bryce G. Hoffman -July 20, 2012: -- The United Auto Workers says an arbitrator has ruled against the union in its dispute with Ford Motor Co. over the automaker's decision to restore merit pay for salaried employees in 2010... The UAW had challenged that move, arguing that it violated the principle of "shared sacrifice" that was the basis for a series of concessions the union agreed to in 2009 when Ford was struggling to return to profitability... The company welcomed the arbitrator's ruling...

* Michigan / USA - Ford upset EU wants Japan free-trade talks 
Dearborn,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel -July 19, 2012: -- Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday was the first automaker to voice displeasure after the European Union announced it wants to start free-trade negotiations with Japan... Automakers fear the European Union, which currently imposes a 10 percent tariff on Japanese car imports, could lift that tariff as part of negotiations. The EU also charges a 10 percent tariff on autos imported from the United States... Japan imposes no tariffs on cars imported from the European Union. But officials say Japan has regulatory barriers to imports... 


- ELECTRIC CARS - 

* California / USA - Tesla's Model S is a fast and fun thrill ride

Palo Alto,CAL,USA -The Detroit News/San Jose Mercury News, by Troy Wolverton -July 21, 2012: --  The Tesla all-electric Model S luxury sedan it's "fast" and "fun", and has some serious pickup... Tesla says it will reach 60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds and is governor-limited to 130 miles per hour. The version I drove have some excelent features: Rapid, noiseless acceleration; ability to customize the driving experience; large touch-screen console; contemporary design... Its base Model S can go 160 miles on a charge, Tesla says, while will last as much as 300 miles. That's plenty to get you around town and even head out for a weekend trip and back... Tesla's also working on some rapid-charge technology that will let users recharge their car while on a trip in as little as 30 minutes...
